Brett Austin Baty (born November 13, 1999) is an American professional baseball third baseman in the New York Mets organization. He was drafted by the Mets in the first round of the 2019 MLB draft.

Amateur career[]

Baty attended Lake Travis High School in Austin, Texas, where he played basketball, baseball, and football. He was on the Varsity baseball team as a freshman through his senior year. In his freshman season, (2016) he appeared and played in 28 games. His batting average was .392. In his sophomore season, (2017) he only played one game, because he got injured. In his junior year, (2018) he came back and his batting average was .389 and played 6 games. In (2019) his senior season, he had a batting average of .602.[1][2][3] He was named the Gatorade Baseball Player of the Year.[4] As a senior, he hit .615 with 19 home runs and 50 RBIs.[5][6] He committed to play college baseball at the University of Texas.[6]

Professional career[]

Baty was selected by the New York Mets in the first round (12th overall) of the 2019 Major League Baseball draft.[7] He signed for $3.9 million,[8] and was assigned to the Gulf Coast League Mets.[9] After five games, he was promoted to the Kingsport Mets,[10][11] before being promoted to the Brooklyn Cyclones. Over 51 games between the three teams, he batted .234/.368/.452 with seven home runs and 33 RBIS. Baty returned to Brooklyn (now a Class A-Advanced affiliate) to begin 2021.[12] In June 2021, Baty was selected to play in the All-Star Futures Game.[13]
