Brimah Razak (born 22 June 1987) is a Ghanaian professional footballer who plays for Spanish club Linares Deportivo as a goalkeeper. He has spent most of his career playing for lower-tier sides in the Spain including Guadalajara, Mirandes and Cordoba.[1] He previously played for South African team Mamelodi Sundowns, winning the league in his debut and only season with the club.

Club career[]

Early career[]

After rarely settling as a youth player, Accra-born Razak started his professional career in January 2007 with Portugal's G.D. Chaves, playing in the country's second division. The following year he moved down to the third level and joined Madeira's C.F. União, being first choice as they placed second their regional group – albeit without a final promotion, missing out by one point to FC Penafiel.

Polio Ejido[]

In the summer of 2008, Razak returned to a club he had already represented as a youth, Polideportivo Ejido in Spain's division three, backing up veteran Joaquín Valerio in his first and only season.

Real Betis[]

Subsequently, he signed with Real Betis, but spent his first year in the same tier as the previous campaign, as he appeared solely for the reserve side. Razak was promoted to Betis' first team for 2010–11, with the Andalusians in the second division. He made his official debut on 1 September 2010, playing the full 90 minutes in a Copa del Rey game against UD Salamanca, a 2–1 home win.[2]

Guadalajara and Córdoba[]

Razak alternated between the second and third levels of Spanish football in the following years, representing CD Tenerife, CD Guadalajara,[3] Córdoba CF B and CD Mirandés.[4] On 29 July 2015 he returned to Córdoba, now being assigned to the main squad also in the second division.[5]

Mamelodi Sundowns[]

In August 2017, Razak joined South African champions Mamelodi Sundowns, making it his first time of featuring for a club outside of Spain and Portugal during his senior career.[6][7] He signed a 3-year deal as a free agent after his contract with Córdoba expired.[8] He stated in an interview that his reason for joining was because the club was the best club in the PSL and in Africa.[9] He made his debut on 11 September 2017, in a 2–1 away victory over Free State Stars.[10] In his debut and only season, he played 4 league and served mostly as back-up to Denis Onyango as they won the 2017–18 Premier Soccer League.[11][12][13] Ahead of the 2018–19 season, he parted ways with Sundowns following a mutual agreement to terminate his contract. His decision was reportedly due to the lack of playing time.[14][15]

Linares Deportivo[]

Razak joined Linares Deportivo in July 2019 on a one year deal.[16][17] In his debut season, he helped them to gain promotion from the Tercera División during the 2019–20 season to the Segunda División B.[18] They amassed 75 points; 27 more than their closest challengers El Ejido after 29 matches in Group 9 before the season was truncated due to the coronavirus pandemic.[19] At the end of the season he was voted as the best goalkeeper after he had conceded 13 goals in 25 league matches.[19][18]

Brimah Razak AFCON final 2015

In August 2020, he extended his contract with the club by another year until 2021.[20] In his second season, he helped them to reach the Segunda Division promotion play-offs for the first time in 13 years.[21] They however lost the play-offs but were promoted to the newly formed Primera División RFEF for the 2021–22 season. He was voted to into the Segunda División B Team of the season and voted the Best Goalkeeper in the league after having an outstanding on the season and keeping 15 clean sheets in 24 appearances.[22]

International career[]

Razak earned his first cap for Ghana on 14 August 2013, appearing in a 2–2 friendly draw in Turkey. He was part of the squad that appeared in the

2015 Africa Cup of Nations, being first-choice as the nation reached the final;[23] in the decisive match, against the Ivory Coast, he missed his penalty shootout attempt in an eventual 8–9 loss.[24]

Personal life[]

Razak had two children; a son called Nasser and a daughter called Atu.[25] He refers to them as being his ''biggest idols and his life''. He idolizes Ghanaian international goalkeeper Sammy Adjei, who won many laurels whilst playing for Accra Hearts of Oak and is remembered also for the 1999 U–20 World Cup quarter final match between Ghana and Spain.[25]
