Morgan Gardner Bulkeley High School, known as Bulkeley High School, is a public school for grades 9 - 12, located in Hartford, Connecticut. It is part of the Hartford Public Schools District, and houses the district's central office. The school has an academic focus on teacher preparation and humanities, as well as a computer science track. The school also has language classes in Arabic and Spanish.[2]

Bulkeley was founded in 1926, and the building is currently undergoing major renovations (as of August 2021), estimated at $150 million. The renovations include centralizing all food service for the school district at the Bulkeley location.[3] During renovations, 9th and 10th graders are attending school at 585 Wethersfield Avenue in Hartford, while 11th and 12th graders are attending school at 395 Lyme Street.[4]

The Bulkeley High School enrollment was 562 students, as of the 2019-2020 school year. About 70% of the students identify as Hispanic, approximately 25% identify as Black or African American, and other groups are represented in smaller numbers.[1]

History[]

Bulkeley High School was founded in 1926. It is named after the businessman and politician Morgan Gardner Bulkeley, who was a U.S. Senator for the State of Connecticut, the 54th Governor, and for over forty years the president of the Aetna Life Insurance Company. As of the end of the 1930s, Bulkeley was one of four public high schools in Hartford and had an enrollment of 1,743, along with Hartford Public High School and Thomas Snell Weaver High School.[5]
