CLG Chill Chartha[1] is a GAA club based in Kilcar, County Donegal, in Ulster, Ireland.[2] They have won the Donegal Senior Football Championship on six occasions, the last in 2017. They regard themselves as being "down the trough".[3]

They have an intense rivalry with Na Cealla Beaga.[4] They also maintain a strong rivalry with their neighbours, Naomh Columba.

History[]

League[]

CLG Chill Chartha play in Division 1 of the Donegal All County league and are a record 14 times league champions (1933, 35, 59, 75, 79, 81, 82, 83, 84, 87, 2014, 16, 17 and 19). They were relegated 2009 despite finishing a point off a league semi place they went down after a number of playoffs they made their return to the top flight after winning the Division 2 title in 2011.

They won the senior Division One League title for the first time since 1987 following a 5–17 to 0–10 win away to Gaoth Dobhair in 2014.[5]

Championship[]

They won the Senior Championship for the first time in 1925 and the last time was in 2017 following a 0-07 to 0-04 win over Naomh Conaill their first win since 1993 and 6th overall, in 2016 they made their first final appearance since 93 but went down by a point to Glenswilly. They are to face Naomh Conaill in the 2020 final which is on hold due to Covid 19.

They won the Comórtas Peile na Gaeltachta on six occasions the last being in 2014 and won the county Gaeltacht on 9 occasions the last being in 2019 (2020 was not played), they also won the Junior Gaeltacht on two occasions most famously in 1989 where they won both national titles at Naomh Columba.

The club has had great success at underage level winning the County Under 21 Championship on six occasions (1972, 73, 74, 2011, 13 and 15), they won the Minor title on four occasions (1964, 98, 2010 and 12) along with a lot of underage honours CLG Chill Chartha Club honors.

The club have six players who have played at senior inter-county level for Donegal in recent years: brothers Patrick and Stephen McBrearty; Ciaran McGinley; brothers Mark and Ryan McHugh and their cousin Eoin McHugh.

Patrick McBrearty and Mark McHugh are winners of the All-Ireland Senior Football Championship.
