The Cadillac Lyriq (pronounced "lyric") is an upcoming electric crossover to be produced by Cadillac,[2] a division of the automotive group General Motors (GM). It is the third GM electric vehicle (EV) sold in North America, after the Chevrolet Bolt EV and EUV, and Cadillac's first fully electric vehicle. It introduces new technology, a new design style, the ability to park and unpark itself, as well as to drive on a freeway without the driver steering the wheel, a new version of GM's Super Cruise semi-autonomous driving system.[3] The Lyriq will launch in the US in early 2022 as a 2023 model.[4] It will be assembled at the Spring Hill Manufacturing factory in Spring Hill, Tennessee for North America and at a new EV-only plant in Yantai, China for Asia.
History[]
GM has several EV models produced on its existing BEV2 platform. At the 2019 North American International Auto Show, CEO Mary Barra revealed several details about the group's upcoming series of EVs,[5] which included a crossover from Cadillac.[6] The name Lyriq follows a pattern of several prior Cadillac concept vehicles, including the Evoq, Provoq, and Celestiq, all deliberately ending in "q".[7]
The name Lyriq for Cadillac's first EV is derived from the Cadillac brand being mentioned in more music lyrics than any other brand, automotive or non-automotive.[citation needed]
Cadillac originally planned for a US-market reveal of the Lyriq (as a "show car" or concept car) on April 2, 2020, followed by a launch soon thereafter for the 2021 model year. Due to the outbreak of novel coronavirus,[8] it was postponed to August 6.[9] Production of the Lyriq was also delayed to early 2022.[10][11] Chinese and Asian market production at a new plant at Shanghai GM's Yantai complex built for Ultium will start slightly before Spring Hill starts Lyriq assembly for North America.
Following the public debut of the Lyriq show car at the 2021 Shanghai Auto Show, the production version was revealed on April 21, 2021.[4]
Both Yantai and Spring Hill will get their batteries from LG Chem, with Spring Hill initially getting pouch-type Ultium cells from an LG Chem plant in South Korea. This will be done until GM and LG Chem expand Spring Hill to accommodate Ultium battery production for both domestic use and exports to Mexico.
Specifications[]
When it debuts, the Cadillac Lyriq will have a single motor driving the rear wheels.[4] All-wheel drive is expected to follow later. The motor generates 340 hp (254 kW) and 325 lb⋅ft (441 N⋅m) torque. It will be powered by a 100 kWh battery with an estimated 300 mile range. The battery supports Level 2 and DC fast charging.
Competition[]
The Lyriq will compete with other midsize electric luxury crossovers like the Tesla Model X, Audi e-tron (Sportback), BMW iX and Mercedes-Benz EQC.[12]
