In 2017, Dimitri Rassam (Chapter 2 Productions) and Helen Estabrook (Condé Nast Entertainment) announced they would be producing Benjamin Millepied's film adaptation of the musical.[3] In 2019, Sony Pictures Classics acquired the project, with Melissa Barrera and Jamie Dornan attached to play Carmen and Aidan, respectively, with a script by Nilo Cruz.[4] In November 2020, it was announced that Dornan was dropped and Paul Mescal was attached to play the role of Aidan, while confirming that Cruz was dropped and was replaced by Alexander Dinelaris Jr. as screenwriter, and Goalpost Pictures had replaced Condé Nast Entertainment as a producer.[5] As of September 2021, confirmation that the film had been completed was yet to be announced.[6]
