Carole Gray Bamford OBE is a British entrepreneur, philanthropist and champion of sustainable,[1] mindful living who founded Daylesford Organic, an organic farm and retail business, and Bamford, a natural beauty, clothing and wellness brand.

Personal life[]

Carole Bamford (née Carole Gray Whitt) was born in Nottingham in 1946. She lives in the Cotswolds with her husband, Lord Bamford,[2] chairman of the construction equipment manufacturer JCB, whom she married in 1974. The couple have three children and eight grandchildren.

In 1976, Carole Bamford started converting the family’s farms in Staffordshire and Gloucestershire over to organic, responsible farming based on traditional methods. This led to the opening of a farmshop and café on the Daylesford House[3] estate in Gloucestershire in 2002.

As well as the original farmshop in Kingham, today Daylesford also has four stand-alone café–shops in London, situated in Brompton Cross, Pimlico, Notting Hill and Marylebone.

As the founder of Daylesford Organic, Carole is recognised as a visionary in organic farming and food retail. In 2006, Carole Bamford was awarded ‘Personality of the Year’ at the Food and Farming awards. In 2012, Daylesford received ‘UK's Best Organic Retailer’ at the Natural and Organic Product awards[4] for its online farmshop on Ocado. In 2021 Daylesford Organic’s restaurant in Kingham was awarded a Michelin Green Star, celebrating chefs who’ve chosen to bring more sustainable practices to Great Britain and Ireland’s gastronomy scenes.

Bamford[]

Carole’s eponymous wellness brand Bamford was born out a belief that what we put on our body is as important as what we put into it. Through her spa, clothing, bath, body and homeware collections Carole has been an energetic promoter of natural, organic beauty products and sustainably-produced garments made from natural fibres. Bamford has been awarded the Positive Luxury Butterfly Mark,[5] which recognises its positive actions for people and planet. More specialised certifications such as Soil Association COSMOS Organic have been achieved on a large number of its bath, skincare and body products.

Philanthropy[]

In 1999 Carole Bamford launched the NSPCC’s Full Stop campaign to end child cruelty.

The Lady Bamford Charitable Trust was formed in 2001, with the objective of helping people from the most disadvantaged quarters in India access a better quality of life. The trust’s scope of work includes supporting the quality of education within schools, providing skills and training to help prepare pupils for life after school, and helping women and young men from developing communities learn traditional crafts and then use these skills to provide valuable employment. In South America, the Fundaçao Lady Bamford opened in 2009, and in the USA, The Lady Bamford Center for Early Childhood Development in Savannah, Georgia was opened in 2007.

In 2007, Carole launched The Daylesford Foundation, which supports projects in the UK that educate children and young people in the core areas of organic food, growing and the countryside. In 2012, she received an International Leadership award at the Global Green Millenium Awards.

In 2006 Carole was appointed OBE, for services to children and families.

A longstanding champion of artisan skills, traditions and craftsmanship, in 2019 Carole opened Nila House in Jaipur – a centre of excellence dedicated to honouring and preserving the natural dye and handloom traditions of India.

In 2019 Carole launched Seed,[6] a biannual magazine dedicated to sustainable living.

She has also authored two books that focus on seasonal recipes to nourish mind and body – Nurture, published in 2018, and A Love For Food  originally published in 2013, with the release of a revised edition in 2020.
