Casimir Middle School
Casimir Middle School is a junior high school located in Torrance, California. The school originally opened in 1950 as North Torrance Elementary School, holding just around 450 K-8 students. After North High School opened in 1955, the district renamed the campus Casimir Elementary School. One night in the early 70s, vandals set a fire that gutted a pair of classrooms. The building was torn down, leaving a square of floor tile in a paved courtyard that students would run and slide on. As attendance declined from peak Baby Boom numbers, the district consolidated and closed some campuses. In 1974, K-5 students were moved to Lincoln Elementary, and Casimir became a middle school.
Now, holding over 1,000 students, with 77% of passing GPAs, Casimir was one of the first middle schools to be honored with the California Distinguished School award in 1992. Their mascot is a cougar. [1]
