Catherine von Fürstenberg-Dussmann (born January 26, 1951) is an American actress, designer, businesswoman and, since 2011, Chairwoman of the Board of Trustees of the Peter Dussmann Foundation.

Biography[]

Fürstenberg-Dussmann is the descendant of a member of the Fürstenberg aristocratic family who emigrated to the United States in 1847. She was born in St. Louis, Missouri,[1][2] one of seven children of a wealthy lawyer.[3] The upbringing in her parents' home was marked by strict Catholicism.

After studying literature and psychology from 1969 to 1973 at Regis University in Denver, she was a member of the drama studios of the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in London from 1973 to 1974. She then worked as an actress and model in Los Angeles. Most of the acting offers resulted in comical roles. To do this, she started her own business for interior design. In 1980, she married the entrepreneur , but did not hold a position in the company. The couple has a daughter.[4] Fürstenberg-Dussmann often spends time on the family estate in southern Germany. She is a rider.[5]

Entrepreneurial and social work[]

After her husband suffered a stroke in 2008, he died in 2013, Fürstenberg-Dussmann joined the supervisory board of the Berlin-based company , founded by her husband in 1963, with over 60,000 employees worldwide. In April 2009, she took over the management of the supervisory board. At the beginning of 2011, she reorganized the top management. The supervisory board was replaced by a board of trustees in Berlin, which she has headed ever since.

As an entrepreneur, she is committed to promoting women in management positions and is also dedicated to childcare. According to their ideas, kindergartens should be open around the clock and include individual support for each child. Upbringing should ideally be bilingual in German and English as early as the kindergartens. In the summer of 2011 she opened the first cultural kindergarten of this kind at the Accident Hospital in Berlin-Marzahn.
