Chandahandi is a town and Block in Nabarangpur District in Odisha State in India.[1][2][3]

Demographics[]

As of 2001 census,[4] the block had a total population of 61076, which consists of 30350 male and 30726 female. Total SC (Scheduled Caste) and ST (Scheduled Tribe) population was 6,479 and 20,276 respectively.[5] According to Census 2011, the block had a total of 73,953, which constitutes 36,460 males and 37,493 females across 87 census villages. There are about 9 villages with less than 200 population.

Spoken and written languages[]

Local languages are used for communication mainly by tribal people like Bhotra, Gond, Kandha, Paraja etc. Odia, Sambalpuri, Chhatishgarhi, Hindi are also widely spoken in Chandahandi tehsil. Hindi is often used by Agrawals and Jains residing here. Odia and English are used for official purposes.

The town has been expanded with fully functional government services, including Block office, a police station, post office, tahasil office, Agriculture Office, Hospital, Forest Office, Indian Gas Agency, two filling stations, fire station, Utkal Gramya bank and Bank Of Baroda. Cellular mobile service by BSNL and Airtel have been set up earlier, and recently Jio has started its Smart service

Economy[]

The main economical factor over which chandahandi stands is production of maize and paddy. Outskirts yield maize, and this town is the hub for the transportation of tonnes of maize in post-rain seasons. Other than maize, some forest products like Kendu Leaf, Sal Seed, and vegetables are being exported to outside. Being based mainly on agriculture, business relating to fertilizer, pesticides, garments and retail are conducted. Weekly markets (Hato) are organized in a nearby location on fixed weekdays, to share products within the area. chandahandi is one of the highest producer of maize crop in whole Odisha.

Art and culture[]

As this place is happened to be a town of Nabarangpur District has an old tradition of Art and Culture, People of the tehsil perform folk dance like Geet Kudia, Ghumura, Banabadi, Madhia, Samparda, Sankirtann etc. Rath Jatra, Dusshera (Dasahara), Holi and Mahasivaratri all these Hindu festivals are celebrated together by the town people.

Festivals[]

  • Mondei (Derived from Hindi word "Mondi" means "small market") is a local festival and is a huge celebration in this town and Nabarangpur District. Most people of the town as well as the district celebrates the festival by worshipping a common presiding deity. Generally this festival is celebrated after harvesting of crops. During the festival many entertainment programmes like plays, opera, melody and folk dances are performed whole night. To watch this large no. of men and women comes from all corner of the Nabarangpur district.

Holi, Dussehra, Ratha Yatra, Nua khai, Bol Bum, Kalasi etc. are among festivals that are celebrated in the Chandahandi Tehsil.
