Chandrakant Devatale (7 November 1936 – 14 August 2017) was an author and poet of Sathotari Hindi poetry.[1][better source needed] He has been associated with[vague] teaching work in higher education. He won the Makhanlal Chaturvedi Award,[citation needed] a prominent literature honour of the Government of Madhya Pradesh.

Early life and education[]

Devatale was born in Jaulkheda, a village District in Betul, Madhya Pradesh.[1] He completed his higher education from Indore and Ph.D. from Sagar University.He started writing poetry in 1952 and by 1960 he was published in all major literary magazines in Hindi. He has written more than 500 poems. His daughter Anupriya Devtale is considered among the top class of Violin players from India.[2]

Devtale's major works are as follows:

  • हड्डियों में छिपा ज्वर (Fever hidden in bones)
  • दीवारों पर खून से (On the walls with blood)
  • लकड़बग्घा हँस रहा है (Hyena laughing)
  • रोशनी के मैदान की तरफ़ (Towards the field of light)
  • भूखंड तप रहा है (Plot is heating)
  • हर चीज़ आग में बताई गई थी (Everything was told in the fire)
  • पत्थर की बैंच (Stone Bench)
  • पत्थर रोशनी (The Stone Light)
  • उजाड़ में संग्रहालय (Museum in Desh)[3]

He wrote many more poems and articles about the life of poor and unprivileged people of India.[4] His Poem "यमराज की दिशा" (Direction of Yamraj) has been published in National Council of Education Research & Training (NCERT)Textbook "क्षितिज" (Kshitij) for Class IX.[5]

Translations of his poems have been made in Indian languages and foreign languages.

Devatale's poetry has its roots in the life of the villages and the lower middle class.[7] In it, human life is present with its diversity and irony. While there is anger against the ugliness of the system in the poet, there is also human love. He says his words directly and deadly.[8]

Death[]

Devtale died on 14 August 2017 due to a long illness.[8]
