Chapel Hart is an American country music vocal group from Poplarville, Mississippi. The group's members are sisters Danica Hart and Devynn Hart, and their cousin Trea Swindle, all three of whom are vocalists. The group has independently released one studio album, three singles, and three music videos.

History[]

The three members of Chapel Hart are sisters Danica Hart and Devynn Hart, and their cousin Trea Swindle, all of whom are African Americans and natives of Poplarville, Mississippi. The three began singing together in 2014, busking by performing cover songs on the streets in New Orleans, Louisiana.[1] From there, the three began writing original songs as well.[2] Taking their name from a church in their hometown, the trio was discovered by record producer Jeff Glixman, who would also serve as their manager and producer.[3]

In 2019, the group independently released an album titled Out the Mud. They also performed at a music festival in Innsbruck, Austria.[1] This was followed in 2020 by a standalone single titled "Jesus & Alcohol", which features ZZ Top member Billy Gibbons on guitar. They also shot a music video for the song, in which Gibbons plays the role of a pastor.[4] T. Graham Brown and Deborah Allen also make cameos in the video, which aired on CMT after its release.[5]

CMT selected Chapel Hart as one of several artists for their 2021 "Next Women of Country" program, which promotes new and upcoming female country music artists. This was followed in 2021 by the group's second single, "I Will Follow". This song has also received a music video which has aired on CMT, and Jackyl frontman Jesse James Dupree makes a cameo in it.[6] Jennifer Hanson wrote the song with Savannah Keyes and Nick Brophy, the latter of whom co-produced it with Glixman. The corresponding music video began airing on CMT on February 5, 2021.[7] Kevin John Coyne of Country Universe rated the song "A", praising the group members' singing voices while comparing the arrangement favorably to the works of SHeDAISY and the Chicks.[8] A third single and video, "You Can Have Him Jolene", followed in March 2021. This song is an answer song to Dolly Parton's "Jolene".[9]

In July 2021, the group announced a second studio album, to be titled The Girls Are Back in Town.[10] Glixman also produced this album.[11]

Musical styles and influences[]

Danica told the Houston Chronicle in 2020 that one of her influences was when she would listen to George Strait and Kenny Rogers albums while riding with her father in the car. She and Devynn have also cited Gretchen Wilson as a primary musical influence.[4] Joey Guerra of the Houston Chronicle noted that Chapel Hart's sound is heavily reliant on their use of vocal harmony. He also found Danica's voice comparable to that of Etta James, while also finding influences of a "classic girl group" sound on other songs.[4] Swindle told American Songwriter in late 2020 that she was aware of the unusual choice for an African American act to record country music; she told the publication, "You don’t really choose [country music]; it was how we grew up and who we are".[3]
