Charlotta Bedoire, (January 5, 1725 – December 31, 1808),[1] was a Swedish socialite. She was a member of the bourgeoisie, as well as spouse of the merchant and extremely wealthy merchant and businessman Herman Petersen.[2] She has been portrayed by Swedish writer Alice Lyttkens in the book Hasard med Gyldmynt (1965).[3]

Biography[]

Charlotta was born daughter of the wealthy businessman François Bedoire and Maria Elisabeth Ross.[4] She was of French, Dutch and Scottish descent, descending from French huguenots residing in Saintogne on her father's side,[5] and from several Scottish clans on her mother's side. Her father was one of the founding members of the Swedish East India Company in 1731.

In 1744, she married her first cousin Frederic Bedoire (1714–1748) in a ceremony hosted by the French-Lutheran parish in Stockholm and in 1753, she married the director of the Swedish East India Company Herman Petersen.[6][7] She was ennobled along with her three daughters and stepsons in 1770, in honor of her late husband's services. They became the first members of the noble family af Petersens.[8]

A painting portraying Charlotta Bedoire was sold at Bukowskis for 80.000 SEK.[9]
