Chatia College (Assamese: চতিয়া মহাবিদ্যালয়) is an institution for higher education located in Sootea[1] in Naduar area under Biswanath district of Assam, India. The college was established in 1971.

Geography[]

Chatia College is a premier institute of higher learning in Sootea, Assam. It was established in 1971.[2] The college is situated at the heart of Sootea around one kilometre (0.62 mi) away from the NH – 15 in its own plot of land which covers an area of about 54 bighas. The college has Arunachal Pradesh to the north, the Brahmaputra river to the south, the Ghiladhari river to the east, and the Dekorai river to the west. About 72 villages comprise the areas immediately surrounding the college. The serene and eco-friendly campus adds to the beauty of this institution.

History[]

Former MLA, Late Robin Saikia contributed greatly to this institution by facilitating mobilization of funds from the ABITA[3] in the initial construction purpose of the institution. The role played by Shri Padma Hazarika, present MLA of Sootea (Vidhan Sabha constituency) in establishing the institution, displaying his incredible versatility as the Chief architect of the college is universally acknowledged . The college is affiliated to Gauhati University. It is situated in a rural area with the objective of giving boost to students belonging to SC/ST/Minority categories besides a large number of tea garden students.

With a small batch of 78 students in 1971, the college grown at present it imparts education to 1451.

Courses[]

The college offers the following courses: two-year higher secondary courses in arts under Assam Higher Secondary Education Council, three-year degree courses in arts stream under Gauhati University and U.G.C sponsored career oriented courses are conducted in this college.

The college is also a centre of distance education to the Krishna Kanta Handiqui State Open University (KKHSOU)[4] and the institute of Distance and Open Learning (IDOL) of the Gauhati University.
