Chizami

Chizami village is one of the biggest amongst the Chakhesang villages in Phek District of Nagaland with a population of 4350 and 776 households. Situated on National Highway-29, Chizami is Located 88 km away from the state Capital Kohima and 58kms away from Phek, the District Headquarter.

Establishment of Village: Thono and Tsühah from Lekromi village established Chizami Village. The Name 'Chizami' is derived from the word'Echüzimi' which means 'People of Echümi(Sumi)lake'. Chizami literally means 'People of lake'(Ezimi) because of a lake which was situated in the middle of the village, now referred to as Theza area. During Bristish rule, Chizami was also called Khezhabama(Khuzhabemi) because most of the inhabitants speak the Khuzha dialect. Within the Village, there are 21 clans migrated from Various places and settled in Chizami , out of which 8 clans came from Sumi Village.

Demographics[]

As counted in the Census 2011, Chizami Village has the total number of 586 families residing. The total population of the village is 2592 in which 1289 are males and 1303 are females. The total population of Scheduled Tribes resides here are 2565 out which 1275 are males and 1290 are females.[1]

Chizami Village has a total of 1682 people who are educated in which 911 are males and 771 are females.

The village of Chizami is popular for its Chizami weave in local textiles.

This small village came into the limelight when North East Network (NEN) had started working towards the success of Chizami village in Nagaland. It is dedicatedly working toward improving the quality of life woman resides locally. NEN generates opportunities in the region by weaving traditional textiles and organic farming which is actually disconnected from the cities.[2]
