Choti Sarrdaarni (transl. Little Sarrdaarni) is an Indian Hindi-Punjabi romantic drama television series. Produced by Cockcrow and Shaika Entertainment, it premiered on 1 July 2019 on Colors TV. It stars Nimrit Kaur Ahluwalia and Mahir Pandhi in lead roles of Seher and Rajveer respectively.

Plot[]

Carefree and bubbly Meher Kaur Dhillon falls in love with Manav Sharma, who dreams to become an IAS Officer. Meher gets pregnant with his child. Her mother, Kulwant Kaur Dhillon, who is the Sarpanch of the village, gets furious by listening to Meher's pregnancy and refuses to accept Manav for being financially unstable and stabs him and throws him down in the river. To become a MLA, she forces Meher to marry a widower, Sarabjeet "Sarab" Singh Gill, a very well–connected widower, the president ofruling party in Amritsar who has a 5-year-old son, Paramjeet "Param" Singh Gill. Meher marries Sarab to save her unborn child from Kulwant.

Meher reveals her pregnancy to Sarab who settles her in Serbia, as they and Param visit Serbia with a new identity. But accused of killing Meher, Sarab is taken to India. Meher saves him. He accepts her child as his own. The family celebrates Meher's pregnancy. Sarab's sister, Harleen finds out the baby is not Sarab's and blames Meher.

Meher and Sarab start having feelings for each other. Meher feels that she is in love with Sarab and her destroys her memories with Manav. Later, she delivers a son and names him Karanjeet "Karan" Singh Gill. Sarab's half-sister, Dr. Aditi Kaur Gill enters to take revenge due to her toxic past. Alive but having memory loss, Manav returns as CBI officer Vikram Diwan who is already in love with Aditi. Meher and Sarab assume him as Manav's lookalike. He marries Aditi and regains his memory. Initially, Manav is shocked seeing Meher married, but later accepts it. Soon, Manav learns Karan is his son; he hands over him to Sarab, hence moving with Aditi. Meher is accused of killing her brother, Jagga, and gets jailed. Sarab fails to save her. Kulwant disowns Meher.

5 years later[]

Meher now known as Sirat, lives in Kashmir with her daughter, Seher. Sarab is back to India with Harleen and Karan. Param is still in London. It's revealed Tarkash, the Gills' accountant killed Jagga and trapped Meher into this. She is released after Tarkash's wife, Arati proves it. Karan visits Kashmir for field trip and meets Meher who finds out he is Karan.

Sarab comes there to pick up him. Meher hides her identity and Param returns to India as Seher comes to Gill mansion. Sarab learns Sirat is Meher and Seher is their daughter. He meets Meher after years but faces an accident planned by Kulwant. Meher returns to prove her innocence, but leaves for some work. Kulwant finds out Meher is not Jagga's murderer and regrets.

Meher's friend, Sandhya tells Sarab that IG officer Rajan has kidnapped Meher. Rajan burns her alive. Alive, Meher returns to expose Rajan and unites with Sarab, as Sandhya marries Sameer. Sarab and Meher remarry and expose Kulwant. Sarab learns Meher's father, Trilochan is alive. Kulwant apologizes for her mistakes. Later sadly, Sarab and Meher die in an accident.

16 years later[]

Param, Karan and Seher are grown up. Strong-willed, Seher lives in Canada and befriends Rajveer Singh Babbar, who falls in love with her but is heartbroken when she introduces him to her fiancé, Kunal Malhotra. Param and Karan arrive in Canada.

Seher and Kunal's engagement is fixed. Rajveer returns to Amritsar. Seher, Param and Karan return to India as a fire breaks out in their chemical factory. On the engagement day, an ecstatic Seher waits for Kunal to return from Canada while Param and Karan goes to meet Harshdeep, Punjab's CM regarding their case. Harshdeep proposes Rajveer and Seher's alliance in exchange of her help in the case. Harshdeep kidnaps Kunal on the engagement day and blackmails him to leave Seher. Thus, Kunal makes the Gills believe that he never loved Seher. Seher is surprised to know the Rajveer is CM's brother who saved her life and soon their alliance is fixed. Rajveer and Seher marry and Seher is welcomed in the family.

Seher start having feelings for Rajveer and feels that she is in love with him. Kulwant Kaur returns after years and reaches Babbar Mansion to help Seher. Kulwant finds a proof against Harshdeep. Seher learns about Kunal's death and then decides to get Harshdeep arrested. But Rajveer takes the allegation on himself and Harshdeep regrets on her actions. Seher gets pregnant with Rajveer's baby. Kulwant decides to get Seher to Jammu so that she can be happy but Seher's plane get hijacked. Seher is survived, but loses her child.

Rajveer breaks all his ties with Harshdeep. He tries to divorce Seher but are allowed to live with each other for 6 months. Seher decides to let Rajveer live in Gill Mansion. Rajveer learns that his eyesight is in danger and creates problems with Gills to get hatred from them and also calls Harleen to create problems between Karan and Param. Later Rajveer confesses his love to Seher. Later Rajveer goes blind leaving Seher divasted.

Development[]

Based in Amritsar, Punjab, the series is mainly filmed in Mumbai.[4] In November 2019, the honeymoon sequence was filmed in Serbia.[5]

On 12 September 2019, the filming was held for three hours due to the fight by the workers’ union and Allied Mazdoor Union with producers owing to due in payments.[6]

Filming[]

The production and airing of the show was halted indefinitely in late March 2020 due to the coronavirus outbreak.[7] The filming resumed after three months and the show started airing again on 13 July 2020.[8][9] During the break, the main actors Rekhi, Ahluwalia and Tak shot a few episodes from their homes during the nationwide lockdown which streamed under Lockdown Special Episodes on Colors TV's official digital platform Voot.[10]

The production was halted for few days from 1 September 2020 after Krishna Soni tested positive for coronavirus.[11]

In February 2021, the show took a 5 years leap and female child artist Kevina Tak, who played as Param, roped to play as Meher and Sarab's daughter, Seher. Child artists Aekam Binjwe, Gaurika Sharma and Dhan Tejas entered to play as Param, Karan and Yuvi after leap.

In July 2021, it was announced that the show would take a leap of 16 years and Nimrit Kaur Ahluwalia will play the role of her daughter Seher. It was officially confirmed with the release of the promo showing the 16 year leap with new characters Mahir Pandhi and Varun Toorkey, whereas the exit of Avinesh Rekhi, Anita Raj and other supporting actors.[12] However, Anita Raj and Mansi Sharma returned as Kulwant Kaur and Harleen Gill in November/December 2021.

Critical response[]

The initial promo based on Gurudwara background of the series created disappointment between the Sikhs and a complaint protesting it was written to the channel by All India Sikh Students Federation as they considered some portrayal hurting their sentiments.[13]

Ratings[]

In week 41 of 2020, it became the fourth most watched Hindi GEC in urban with 5.281 million impressions.[14]

Crossover[]

In December 2019, Choti Sarrdaarni and Vidya had a crossover while Salman Khan, Sonakshi Sinha and Sai Manjrekar appeared to promote their upcoming film Dabangg 3.[17]
