Clap Clap Riot

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Clap Clap Riot is a five-piece indie rock band based in Auckland, New Zealand.

The band originated in Canterbury and was originally named Band Theft Auto.[1] The name Clap Clap Riot comes from the applause machine designed by John Lydon for the show Top Of The Pops in the early 1980s.[citation needed]

Their energetic live shows have seen them sell out shows across New Zealand and tour Australia a number of times. The band have toured with Alt-J and played alongside The 1975, The Naked and Famous, Jimmy Eat World and Manchester Orchestra and appeared at festivals Rhythm and Vines, Big Day Out, Homegrown and Splore. MTV Australia televised a live performance from Clap Clap Riot when they performed at The Lair alongside Evermore in Sydney, in April 2009.[citation needed]

The band released their debut EP TV Knows Better through RhythMethod in February 2009, which produced two singles - "Thief" and "Don't Want Your Baby". TV Knows Better was produced by Jimmy Christmas of The D4.

Their debut album Counting Spins was made available on 15 June 2012 through Universal Music New Zealand. The album features the singles "Everyone's Asleep", "Yoko Ono", "Moss-Haired Girl" and "So You Say". The Album was named 'Best NZ Rock album of 2012' by iTunes sand was nominated for 'Best Rock Album Of The Year' at the 2012 Vodafone NZ Music Awards. It charted at #11 on the week of release in the NZ Top 40 Album charts. Single 'Everyone's Asleep' was also Selected as a finalist for the Apra Silver Scroll Songwriting Awards

On 14 February 2014, the band released their second record Nobody / Everybody, produced and mixed by Kody Nielson (The Mint Chicks / Opossum), engineered and mastered by Olly Harmer (The Naked and Famous). The album garnered widespread critical acclaim and was named #8 in the best albums of 2014 by The NZ Herald and was nominated for 'Best Rock Album' at the Vodafone NZ Music Awards Single 'All About The Weather' was named one of the top 50 songs of 2014 by Christchurch publication The Press.

In-between releases, the band put out the single 'Back Into Your Life' with friend Buzz Moller of Auckland Indie band Voom. The single was a long-listed finalist in the 2015 Apra Silver Scroll songwriting awards.

Third album 'Dull Life' was released on the 28th of April 2017, produced and engineered by Tom Healy (Tiny Ruins, The Chills, Julia Jacklin). The album was a critical success and displayed some of the bands most colourful material to date. The album was also nominated for 'Best Rock' record at the Vodafone NZ Music Awards.

The band are currently finishing off their fourth record with Tom Healy again at the helm. The first single ‘It’s Alright’ is due out in July 2021 with the full record coming in the first half of 2022. The album highlights the fast-paced live energy of the band whilst delivering the singalong hooks that their fans have come to know and love.
