Colin G. Basran (born November 14, 1977) is a Canadian politician, currently the mayor of Kelowna, British Columbia.[1] He won election in the 2014 municipal election, over former mayor Sharon Shepherd.[1]
Basran graduated from the Broadcast Journalism program at BCIT and worked as a television journalist for CHBC-TV from 2002 to 2007,[2] before leaving the station to go into business as a realtor.[2] He was first elected to Kelowna City Council as a city councillor in the 2011 municipal election.[2]
While Basran's father is of Indian descent,[3] his mother is of European descent. Basran's wife is also of European descent.
Basran is the youngest elected mayor of Kelowna.[1]
In 2021, Basran precided over Chief Administrative Officer Doug Gilchrist's decision to place unvaccinated employees on unpaid leave of absence. Basran was quoted as saying, "it’s something council and I support as another way we can limit the transmission of the virus among staff and the public."
Mayor Basran is currently renting a luxurious lakefront home owned by the Aquilini Development Group, one of BCs largest property developers known for Kelowna property developments like SOPA Square.
