Conrad Freitag (1843–October 26, 1894) was a German American marine artist from Brooklyn, New York. He was best known for his portraits of New York pilot boats. Freitag's works were exhibited at the National Academy and the Brooklyn Art Association. His contribution to American Marine painting is important for his accurate detail of 19th-century ships.

Early life[]

Freitag was born in Germany in 1843.[1][2] He had two brothers, Philip Freitag and John Freitag.[3] He departed Germany and came to America. He settled in Brooklyn, New York.

Career[]

During the American Civil War Freitag enlisted in the Fourteenth Regiment, (also known as the 84th New York Volunteer infantry), in 1862, at the age of 19 in Brooklyn, New York. He served as a private in Company B of the 14th Brooklyn and was promoted to corporal in 1863. On May 8, 1864, he was seriously wounded at the Battle of Spotsylvania, Laurel Hill, Virginia. He was honorably discharged in June 1865. He returned to convalesce in New York where he painted a scene of the Spotsylvania battle, which is when his art career began.[4][5][6]

Freitag was a professional acquaintance of William Garner, a vice-commodore of the New York Yacht Club and owner of the New York’s People Line. Garner commissioned works by Freitag, many of which belong to the N.Y.Y.C and the Museum of the City of New York.[5][7]

His works were exhibited at the National Academy and the Brooklyn Art Association in the 1870s and 1880s. He was best known for his works of New York pilot boats.[1] He often signed his paintings as: C. Freitag, 173 South Str. NY.
