Cooliekkaran is a 1987 Tamil-language action film directed by Rajasekhar produced by S. Thanu. The film stars Vijayakanth and Rupini. It was the debut of Rupini in Tamil cinema. The movie was a superhit at the time of release.[1] The film was a remake of the Hindi film Kaalia.[2]
Plot[]
Raja (Vijayakanth) lives with his elder brother Velu (Nagesh), sister-in-law Lakshmi (Srividya), and their little daughter. He spends his time idle. He is scolded by his brother, and so Raja becomes a coolie and transports articles. He is jailed for smuggling. His brother gets into an accident at work at the mill and loses his arms. He loses his job and needs money for treatment. Raja is released and begs his brother's boss Chakravarthy (Radha Ravi), but he refuses. Raja breaks into the boss' safe to get the money, but it is too late as the brother dies. The boss throws Raja in jail. This is where he meets David (K. Natraj) and decide to seek revenge. In jail, Raja meets the warden Marthandan (Jaishankar), whose daughter was kidnapped by one of the prisoners when she was little.
After his release, he is a different, stronger man. He and his accomplices steal the gold that the boss had been smuggling at the mill. Raja, his accomplices lie to his sister-in-law. They move from poverty into riches. Raja and his men snatch a diamond which is very rare. Priya (Rupini) steals it (fake diamond). Ramanathan (Vijayan) is killed by Chakravarthy and was once a henchmen of Chakravarthy. Ramanathan was assigned to kill Jai and his family in an accident. Marthandan's wife is killed and Ramanathan keeps the child with him. Priya is now reformed. Raja and Priya fall in love and for their engagement he buys all the flowers in the city so Marthandan grew suspicious and starts following Raja. Chakravarthy buys a counterfeit machine, which is spoilt by Raja. Enraged by this, Chakravarthy spills the beans to Raja's sister-in-law Lakshmi that Raja is a smuggler. Lakshmi urges Raja to leave this business. The boss throws Raja in jail. How he escapes and gets his revenge on the boss forms the climax of the movie.
