Seymour "Cy" Chermak (September 20, 1929 – January 29, 2021) was an American producer and screenwriter. He is notable for producing CHiPs, Ironside and Kolchak: The Night Stalker.

Career[]

Chermak started his career in 1946 or 1947, at the age of 17.[1]

In 1950s-1970s, Chermak wrote for the new DuMont Television Network crime drama television series Rocky King Detective as the head writer, which starred Roscoe Karns. He also screenplayed the 1959 film 4D Man with screenwriter, Theodore Simonson. Chermak mostly wrote and produced a few western television shows in the 1960s, including Bonanza, Wanted: Dead or Alive, The Virginian, The Dakotas and Cheyenne. In 1967, he became an executive producer for the new NBC crime drama television series Ironside.[2][3]

In 1970s-1980s, Chermak was nominated for an Primetime Emmy for Outstanding Series - Drama, in 1971.[4] He wrote and produced three short-lived television programs, including Kolchak: The Night Stalker, Barbary Court[5] and spinoff television series Amy Prentiss.[6] In 1978, he became an producer for the new NBC crime drama television series CHiPs.[7]

In 1998, Chermak was a screenwriter for the television film Rescuers: Stories of Courage: Two Families and wrote both segments with his wife, Francine Carroll, Paul Monash and Malka Drucker. He was nominated for an Writers Guild of America Award for 60 Minute Category and a Humanitas Prize nomination for Episodic Drama.[8]

In 2016, Chermak wrote the book The Show Runner: An Insider's Guide to Successful Television Production.[9]

Death[]

Chermak died in January 2021 of natural causes at his home in Honolulu, Hawaii, at the age of 91.[10]
