d’Overbroeck's is an independent, co-educational day and boarding school for students aged 11–18. The school is owned by Nord Anglia Education and is located in Oxford, England. It is made up of three school sites; Years 7-11, The International School and the Sixth Form.

History[]

d'Overbroeck's was founded in 1977 as a sixth form by Malcolm van Biervliet D'Overbroeck.[1] He taught French and Spanish at the school for 30 years until 2007 when he retired.[2] The college was first based at van Biervliet's house.[3]

Years 7-11[]

d'Overbroeck's Years 7-11 is on Leckford Place in North Oxford. Students at Years 7-11 study a curriculum covering a full range of subjects in the Sciences, Humanities, Arts and Modern Languages.[4] This also includes Music, Drama and Sport, both as curriculum subjects and as co-curricular activities.[4]

The International School[]

The International School is located at 111 Banbury Road, in North Oxford. In 2020, the school had over 90 students from countries including the United States, Lithuania, Ukraine and Thailand.[5] The International School currently offers five academic programmes to international students:

  • The Discovery Years (UK Years 7-9)[6]
  • Two-Year IGCSE (UK Years 10-11)[7]
  • One-Year IGCSE (UK Year 11)[8]
  • 4 or 5-Term IGCSE (UK Year 10)[9]
  • UK Study Abroad (UK Years 9-10)[10]

Approximately half of International School students continue on to study at d'Overbroeck's Sixth Form whilst others choose to go on to other UK schools.[5] Some may prefer to go on to an IB programme, others may prefer a change of locations or a leading single-sex school for their sixth form studies.[5]

Sixth Form[]

The Sixth Form is based at 333 Banbury Road, in North Oxford and is the oldest part of d'Overbroeck's.

Students at d'Overbroeck's Sixth Form study the traditional two-year A-Level programme and can choose to study for an Extended Project Qualification (EPQ) alongside their A-Level studies.[11]

Students[]

In 2020, Years 7-11 has approximately 200 students enrolled.[12] The International School has over 90 students[5] and the Sixth Form has approximately 375 students.

At the Sixth Form, approximately 50% of students are British and 50% of students join the school from countries across the world. Half of the school's Sixth Form students are boarders and half are day students.[13]

In 2020, d'Overbroeck's students achieved the following:

Admissions[]

d'Overbroeck's is a selective school. The application process typically involves submitting an application and personal statement, taking part in entrance tests (such as Maths, English and/or Verbal Reasoning) and an interview. Prospective students for Years 7-11 also usually have the option to take part in a taster day to find out more about what the school is like.[17]

A number of scholarships and awards are available at each of the three school sites.[18]

Entry points[]

Students typically join Years 7-11 either in Year 7 or Year 9, however it is possible to join in Year 8 and Year 10 if there is space in the year groups.[17] At The International School, students can join one of five programmes. These programmes include new intakes in September, sometimes in January and occasionally in April each year.[5]

Students can join the Sixth Form in Year 12 to start their two-year A-Level programme.

Entry requirements[]

Years 7-11

In terms of entrance tests, the minimum level required is roughly equivalent to the national average levels in Maths and English.[17]

The International School

  • The Discovery Years (UK Years 7-9 and new from September 2021): IELTS 3+ [6]
  • Two-Year IGCSE (UK Years 10-11): IELTS: 4+ [7]
  • One-Year IGCSE (UK Year 11) IELTS: 5+ [8]
  • 4 or 5-Term IGCSE (UK Year 10) IELTS: 4.5+ [9]
  • UK Study Abroad (UK Years 9-10) IELTS: 4.5+ [10]

Sixth Form[13]

  • Six grade 6s at GCSE or equivalent
  • Minimum grade 4 in Maths and English at GCSE or equivalent
  • A minimum grade 9 at GCSE or equivalent in any subject a student wishes to study at A-Level
  • At least a grade 7 in Maths to study A-Level Maths and a grade 8 or 9 to study A-Level Further Maths
  • IELTS 6-6.5+

d'Overbroeck's is affiliated to the Independent Schools Council (ISC). It is also a member of the British Boarding Schools' Association (BSA) and the Society of Heads (SHHIS).
