Daiki Hashimoto (橋本 大輝, Hashimoto Daiki, born 7 August 2001) is a Japanese artistic gymnast. He is the 2020 Olympic all-around and horizontal bar champion.[1] In 2019, he won the bronze medal in the men's team event at the 2019 World Artistic Gymnastics Championships held in Stuttgart, Germany.[2][3]

Hashimoto was a member of Japan's Olympic men's gymnastic squad at the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo, Japan.[4]

Career[]

2019[]

Hashimoto competed at the World Championships in Stuttgart, Germany, where his team placed third all around.[5] On the pommel horse, he finished in 9th place, and on the horizontal bar, he finished in 4th place.

2021[]

At the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo, Japan, Hashimoto competed for team Japan, which also included Kazuma Kaya, Takeru Kitazono, and Wataru Tanigawa.[6] Hashimoto won an Olympic silver with the squad in the men's all around team competition,[7] posting a combined score of 262.397, which was only 0.103 points behind the winning Russian Olympic Committee team.[1] He also won gold medals in the men's individual all-around and horizontal bar competitions with total score of 88.465 and 15.066,[1] making him the most successful gymnast at these Olympics with three medals—two individual golds and one team silver. Due to his young age at 19 years, 11 months and 21 days old, he also became Japan's second youngest and one of only two teenage male gymnasts in history to win Olympic gold after Kenzō Shirai, who won team gold six days younger in 2016, including by default becoming the youngest Japanese gymnast to win Olympic gold on the men's individual all-around and horizontal bar events.

Personal life[]

Hashimoto was born in Narita, Japan.

His two older brothers, Takuya and Kengo, who competed in artistic gymnastics at the club- and university-level in Japan, inspired Hashimoto to begin gymnastics at age seven at the Sawara Junior Club.[4]

Hashimoto has received two awards. In 2019, he received the Excellence Award at the 2019 NHK Cup. In 2020, he was given the Road to 2020 Olympic Encouragement Award at the TV Asahi Big Sports Awards.[4]

He is a student at Juntendo University in Tokyo, Japan.
