Daniela Fally (born 1 February 1980) is an Austrian operatic coloratura soprano.

Life[]

Born in Pottenstein,[1] Fally completed her vocal studies with distinction in June 2005 at the Vienna University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna, where she had studied opera with Helena Łazarska and lied and oratorio with Edith Mathis, having previously completed a theatre studies degree, a musical education and a private acting education with final stage examinations (also with distinction). She had been on stage since the age of 19, first as an actress, later in musicals and finally as an opera singer. She also won several prizes.

Fally had her beginnings at the side of  [de] at the  [de]: "There I was the girl for everything. From lighting to sponsoring, I did everything! And another important step was my engagement at the  [de], where I had my first speaking roles."[2] This was followed by a stint at the  [], which was also directed by Dvorak at the time.

Her operatic debut was as Zerlina in Mozart's Don Giovanni in Switzerland. In summer 2005, she impersonated Bronislawa in Carl Millöcker's Der Bettelstudent at the  [de]. From autumn 2005, she was a member of the ensemble at the Volksoper Wien for four years, where she was able to develop an extensive repertoire across all genres.

Debut at the Vienna State Opera[]

After Franz Welser-Möst had experienced her in Bad Ischl, Fally made her debut on 9 December 2006 as Fiakermilli in Richard Strauss' Arabella at the Vienna State Opera with extraordinary success in the press and with the audience: "Thus debutante Daniela Fally is the heroine of the evening [. ...]: The quick Fiakermilli performs sparklingly clean coloratura - some more even than once Gruberova - as well as acrobatic feats that fit the semi-seedy ambience [...]". With this, the critic of Die Presse refers to the exorbitant agility of the singer, who even managed a splits during the main aria. Even the otherwise so cool opera reporter of the Der Standard resorted to words of praise such as "brilliant" and "impeccable". After the international press - above all the Herald Tribune - literally gushed with hymns, an international career was already on the horizon.

International career[]

The artist debuted in 2007 as Zerbinetta at the Stadttheater Klagenfurt. The critic of Die Presse praised "exuberant operetta temperament and the coloratura dexterity of a world-class opera diva", while that of Der Standard completely abandoned his usual sobriety and reported "a very decent musical realisation, in which Daniela Fally (as Zerbinetta) naturally wins the most applause. And rightly so. She masters the colouratura-laden role with bravura; but she also manages to draw the character credibly - between sympathy for the composer and the physical confrontation with her male fans, which then almost develops into a jaunty fivesome on the piano. A voice for prominent houses!" In January 2008, the American magazine Opera News even published a hymn of praise par excellence: "Daniela Fally's very first Zerbinetta has what it takes to make Natalie Dessay and Diana Damrau run for cover. She is quite comfortable in the vocal stratosphere, her voice is both big and delightful, she has a captivating technique (what trills!), a seemingly infinite height - she is tiny, free of inhibitions, has the grace of a ballerina and the agility of a contortionist."

It took just under three more years, but since the 2009/10 season the singer has been part of the ensemble at the Vienna State Opera, where her roles so far have included Zerbinetta, Sophie in Der Rosenkavalier, Oscar in Un ballo in maschera, Rosina in Il barbiere di Siviglia, as well as Italian singer in Capriccio, as Sophie in Werther and as Adele in Die Fledermaus. She sang the title role in Donizetti's La fille du régiment alongside Juan Diego Flórez, with Piotr Beczała in Offenbach's Les Contes d'Hoffmann (Olympia).

In 2009, she took on the title role of Regimentstochter also at the Operklosterneuburg. In 2011, the singer was engaged at the Opéra national du Rhin in Strasbourg as Blonde in Mozart's Die Entführung aus dem Serail, and made guest appearances as Zerbinetta at the Munich Opera Festival at the Bayerische Staatsoper, as well as at the Oper Köln. In 2012, she sang both Regimentstochter and Zerbinetta at the Hamburg State Opera, and was Sophie in Strasbourg and Seefestspiele Mörbisch Adele. In November of that year she was engaged as Sophie at the Semperoper in Dresden. She also sang Adele in Munich, Oper Zürich and Deutsche Oper am Rhein, Fiakermilli in Hamburg, and Opéra Royal de Wallonie Zerbinetta.

At the Salzburg Festival, she opened the first Festival Ball in 2012. In December 2013, she debuted as Adele at the Lyric Opera of Chicago, and in April 2014 as Fiakermilli at the Salzburg Easter Festival under the conduct of Christian Thielemann. She also took on this role at the Semperoper in November 2014. In summer 2014, she debuted as the Queen of the Night in Mozart's The Magic Flute on the lake stage of the Bregenz Festival. In 2015, Fally debuted at the Klosterneuburg Opera as Gilda in Rigoletto and sang Zerbinetta in Paris and Sophie in Tokyo. Her repertoire also includes Norina in Don Pasquale, Gretel in Humperdinck's Hänsel and Gretel and Titania in Britten's A Midsummer Night's Dream.

Her popularity with the public is also reflected in numerous appearances on television, including in the cult programme Wir sind Kaiser, in which she also self-deprecatingly stated as reasons for her engagement at the Vienna State Opera - in addition to the three-stroke E in Bad Ischl - a "relatively low-cut décolleté and I already did the splits back then in Bad Ischl".

In Concert[]

Concerts and recitals brought Fally to the Lucerne Festival, the Wiener Musikverein and the  [de] in Graz, the Deutsche Oper Berlin, the Alte Oper in Frankfurt. Frankfurt]], the Salzburgarena, the  [de], the Hamburg Laeiszhalle, the Munich Prinzregententheater, the Theater Bonn, the Grafenegg Festival, as well as to Switzerland, Japan, China and Dubai.  [de] composed the song cycle Von Vögeln und Insekten for Fally, which she premiered at the Vienna Musikverein. Together with she presented in an afternoon concert at the Vienna State Opera Songs by  [de]. The programme of a Mother's Day matinee in 2012 in Waidhofen an der Ybbs with actor Peter Matić and pianist Stephan Matthias Lademann exemplifies how confidently the artist is able to combine serious commitment to classical music with comedic elements.[3]
