Dardanelle High School is a comprehensive public secondary school located in Dardanelle, Arkansas, United States, for students in grades nine through twelve. Dardanelle is the sole high school administered by the Dardanelle School District and serves three counties in the Arkansas River Valley area and as the main feeder school for Dardanelle Middle School. The school is known as the only high school with the Sand Lizard as its school mascot.

Curriculum[]

The assumed course of study for students is to complete the Smart Core curriculum developed by the Arkansas Department of Education (ADE), which requires students complete at least 22 units for graduation. Course offerings include regular and Advanced Placement classes and exams with opportunities for college credit via AP exam or via concurrent credit at University of Arkansas Community College at Morrilton (UACCM) and Arkansas Tech University (ATU). The school is accredited by the ADE.

Between 2007 and 2012, Dardanelle High School has been ranked as a medalist (Silver–2008; Bronze–2007, 2009–12) in U.S. News and World Report Nation's Best High Schools reports.[4] in 2011, Dardanelle was also nationally ranked No. 113 in Most Connected School category by U.S. News & World Report'.[5]

In 2012, Dardanelle was ranked No. 1,889 of 2,008 high schools in the Challenge Index high school scoring system with an index score of 1.009, which is the number of college-level tests given at a school in 2011 divided by the number of graduates that year.

Dardanelle High School participates in the EAST Initiative. In 2008 and 2011, Dardanelle High School was honored as the EAST Founder's Award.[6]

Fine Arts[]

Students may participate in various musical and performing arts including: band (e.g., concert band, jazz band), choir (e.g., a cappella, barbershop quartet, beautyshop quartet) and theater (e.g., competitive speech, drama, stagecraft). Students may participate in Art Club.

Honor societies[]

Honor society organizations include math (Mu Alpha Theta); science (Science National Honor Society (SNHS)); vocal and instrumental music (Tri-M Music Honor Society); journalism (Quill and Scroll Society); drama (International Thespian Society) and Spanish, in addition to National Honor Society and National Beta Club.

Extracurricular activities[]

The Dardanelle High School mascot is the Sand Lizard with the school colors of red and white.

Athletics[]

For the 2012-2014 seasons,[7] the Dardanelle Sand Lizards participate in the 4A Region 4 Conference. Competition is primarily sanctioned by the Arkansas Activities Association with student-athletes competing in baseball, basketball (boys/girls), competitive cheer, competitive dance, football, golf (boys/girls), soccer (boys/girls), softball, tennis (boys/girls), track and field (boys/girls), volleyball and wrestling.[8]

Each year, Dardanelle and rival Danville High School football teams compete for the (Yell County) Judge's Cup.

In 2012, the girls golf team captured the 4A-4 District championship and finished fourth in the 4A state tournament.[9]

In 2012, the boys soccer team made history for making it to the semi-finals for the first time ever.

Clubs and traditions[]

Beyond athletic pursuits, Dardanelle students participate in a variety of leadership, business, affinity groups and career-centric pursuits ranging from membership, activities, events and conferences supported by SkillsUSA, DECA, Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA), Family, Career and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA), Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA) and the aforementioned honor societies.
