David Grubin (born 1944) is an American documentary filmmaker, who has produced and directed numerous films, many of which are best known from airing on PBS.

Biography[]

A director, writer, producer, French and American historian, and cinematographer, David Grubin has produced over 100 films, ranging from history to art, from poetry to science, winning every award in the field of documentary television, including two Alfred I. Dupont awards, two George Foster Peabody prizes, five Writer's Guild prizes, and ten Emmys.

His biographies for American Experience on PBS - LBJ, FDR, Truman, TR: The Story of Theodore Roosevelt, Abraham and Mary Lincoln: A House Divided - have set the standard for television biography. His five-part series for PBS - Healing And The Mind with Bill Moyers - won several awards, with the companion book, rising to number one on The New York Times Best Sellers list.

A member of the executive committee of the Society of American Historians, Grubin has received a Guggenheim Fellowship, has been a Montgomery Fellow at Dartmouth College, and is the recipient of an honorary doctorate from his alma mater, Hamilton College. He is member of the Writers Guild and Directors Guild, and is a former chairman of the board of directors of The Film Forum.

His independent feature film, , has been selected for the Woodstock Film Festival, FilmColumbia Festival, and opening night at the Cinema Arts Festival Houston. He teaches documentary filmmaking at Columbia University's Graduate Film Program.

He is married to the artist Joan Grubin and lives in New York City.
