Debojyoti Mishra (born November 1963 at Kolkata) is an Indian music director and film composer.[1] He became popular with his minimalist classical compositions for the Hindi film Raincoat, directed by Rituparno Ghosh.[2] His work on films like Chokher Bali, Bariwali, Arekti Premer Golpo, Memories in March was acclaimed.[by whom?] He also worked on Bengali films, Chaturanga and , directed by Suman Mukhopadhyay.[3] The songs he composed for the Bengali film Autograph starring Prasenjit Chatterjee, Nandana Sen and Indraneil Sengupta, gained immense popularity. All the songs of this film created a new vibration in Bengali film music. His composition for Titli was immensely praised as well which includes the famous song "Megh Pioner Bager Vitor" sung by Srikanto. He has also composed music for the Malayalam film Calcutta News, which was set in Kolkata. Mishra continues to be one of the greatest Pioneers of the Indian Music Industry and Contemporary of A.R Rahman.

Mishra has expressed his talent through painting also. He is a self-taught artist and exhibited his first solo show in December 2012 in ICCR Kolkata by one of youngest art curator of India, Jyotirmoy Bhattacharya. The composer was inspired to become a painter by the Indian painter Jogen Chowdhury. The show was very successful and his mastery of color contrast, ideas of composition and musical touch to the canvas was highly appreciated by master artists of India as well as art critics and media.[who?] Debojyoti Mishra's first solo violin album "Tagore on Strings" was launched in 2015.

Early years and Career[]

Born in a musical family where his father Jahnabi Ranjan Misra, who was a disciple of Ustad Ali Akbar Khan and Shishir Konya Dhar Choudhary, tutored him and introduced him to violin. He has an elder brother Debashis Mishra who also played violin but did not take it as a profession. Debojyoti brought up at K.M. Naskar Road, Tollygunge. He completed his schooling from Sir Nripendra Nath Institution. Began his musical journey at the age of 3 under the tutelage of his father, he grew up surrounded by music, blessed by contact with many great musicians from a very early age. Shortly after completing his training in western classical music under Professor Joseph Naskar and renowned musician and composer Stanley Gomes, he started training under Indian music maestros, Late K.C Bandopadhyay and Pandit Bhimsen Joshi, exponents of Indian classical music. Thus, with time he assimilated & absorbed the various elements of both Eastern & Western style of classical music. Mishra remarks, " My father, Janhabi Ranjan Misra, introduced me to this magical instrument called violin when I was just nine. It brought a piece of Austria in our Bangal refugee colony. I started learning western classical music from him. Later, I started training under professor Stanley Gomes and then, Dilip Ray. I began performing when I was just 12 or 13. I would work jobs as a background musician in local plays and earn Rs 20-25 per performance!"

The composer stint with nationally acclaimed music composer and director, Salil Chowdhury, "Salilda heard one of my stage performances and liked it. After that, I started working with him and went on to assist him. Salilda expanded my world. I performed as a violinist and a conductor in more than 300 concerts. I also worked in Tarun Majumder, Tapan Sinha and many other mainstream filmmakers' projects. I became friends with Tanmoy (Bose), Bickram (Ghosh) in this phase of my life. I also learned to play piano from Salilda .'' He was fortunate to start his career as chief assistant to legendary music composer Salil Chawdhury for long 14 years. He was chief assistant to Illyaraja, a renowned music director from South India, during the period of 1988-89. He was very closed to Gautam Chattopadhyay, founder of Mahiner Ghoraguli band. He was solo violinist for the great filmmaker, Satyajit Ray, in noted films like Pikoo, Ghare Baire, Ganashatru & Goopy Bagha Phire Elo.


Debojyoti was music composer for several award-winning films for Nationally and Internationally acclaimed directors like Mrinal Sen, Govind Nihalani, Rituparno Ghosh, Florian Gallenberger, Aparna Sen, Amal Palekar, Bhabna Talwar and many others.

He has composed more than 500 ad jingles which includes , , India Today, and many others. He also scored signature tunes for many television channels including , Akash Bangla, Sangeet Bangla, Colours Bangla and many other channels. Many of his songs became very popular in Bengal for his accurate controlled use of instruments and voice. [4] He had composed for Shakira in a British production being directed by Enamul Karim.[5]

In the opening ceremony of 35th NABC at Houston, Texas, the composer presented "Ganner Golpo" which was breathtaking and spectacular. In May, 2016 he presented the musical theatre with more than 100 participants in Alberta Bangla Festival at Calgary, Canada. He is also working with the British film director, Ruhul Amin on a film called Hason Raja with Mithun Chakraborty in the lead role. Mishra has always been famous for his Bohemian lifestyle and his down to the earth attitude. He is a genuine Communist and member of IPTA.

The veteran music director confessed that has married his old flame Jonaki (Mukherjee) in 2010. The music director was previously married to singer Paroma Banerji but they divorced due to personal differences.

The director said that finding love at the age of 47 has been a nice experience for him and right now he is living life to the fullest. Debajyoti said that Jonaki is a trained classical singer and he might use her talents in some of his upcoming projects. When asked about his first marriage, Debajyoti said that he is friends with his ex-wife.
