Deposed Princess Bokchang of the Incheon Yi clan (Korean: 폐비 복창원주 이씨; Hanja: 廢妃 福昌院主 李氏; d. 27 November 1195) was a Korean Queen consort and the 2nd wife of King Injong of Goryeo,[1] which was initially her nephew by his maternal side since his mother, Queen Sundeok was her oldest sister.
Life[]
In January 1125, she entered the palace at the young age. However, based on "Dongguk Tonggam" (동국통감), it rained a lot, the wind blew strong and the trees were uprooted on the day she entered the palace like her second big sister who had already entered the Palace.[2]
In order to poison Injong, her father served him a poisoned rice-cake (떡) and along this time, she secretly informed Injong about this. Then, those tribes threw this rice-cake to the ravens and the ravens ate this and died not long after that. After it was known that this plan failed, Yi Ja-gyeom then tried another plan and ordered her to gave a poison to the King, but she deliberately slipped and spilled the poison while carrying it.
Meanwhile, on 20 June 1126 (4th year reign of Injong), her father was ousted and after that, some of Injong's servants said "The Princess can't be his Queen Consort because she was his maid" (궁주는 왕의 종모(從母)이니 왕후가 될 수 없다). Then, along with her big sister, Princess Yeondeok (연덕궁주) was deposed from her position and just become Lady Yi (이씨).
Even after her deposition, she was still honoured as Primary Consort Bokchang (복창원주, 福昌院主) and was given land, house, maids and received preferential treatment in consideration of her past efforts to save Injong. King Uijong and King Myeongjong, Injong's successor also still respected and treated her sincerely. Later, on winter November 1195, she died without leaving any issue.[3]
