Dirk Ahlborn[1][2] is an entrepreneur, investor, and an American businessman. He is from Berlin and currently works in California;[3] he holds a U.S. citizenship and is the founder and Chairman of Hyperloop Transportation Technologies and CEO of Jumpstarter, Inc.[4][5][6][7][8][9][10][11][12][13][14][15]

Career[]

Early career[]

In 1993, his career started as an investment specialist in Berlin, Germany.[16]

When he was 19 years old, he quit his job in the bank.[3]

In the 1990s, after moving to Italy,[16] Ahlborn founded several companies in the alternative energy and interior design sphere.[17] Ahlborn left Europe and joined the Girvan Institute of Technology, a non-profit incubator, and co-working space. The institute, located in Southern California, was created to assist NASA's Ames Research Center. While working there, he started thinking about ways to apply the co-working notions elsewhere.[18]

JumpStarter, Inc[]

He co-founded and became CEO of Jumpstarter in 2013, the company that developed the crowdsourcing platform JumpStartFund in El Segundo, California.[17]

Hyperloop Transportation Technologies[]

While Ahlborn and his team were drafting what Jumpstarter would look like, Elon Musk expressed his vision for Hyperloop. Musk knew he didn't have the time nor the manpower to pursue the execution of Hyperloop. So he decided to crowdsource it through Jumpstarter.[18] In order to deal with the complex engineering challenge, Jumpstarter started pooling resources around the project, amassing a core team of 420 people.[18]
