Production[]

On February 21, 2019, it was announced that Amblin Partners had bought Distant, a spec script by Spenser Cohen.[3] In August 2019, it was reported that Will Speck and Josh Gordon would co-direct the film, and that Brian Kavanaugh-Jones, Fred Berger, Anna Halberg, and Kevin Vafi would produce.[4]

Anthony Ramos was cast in the leading role of Distant in December 2019,[1] with Rachel Brosnahan joining the following year in February.[5][6] However, Brosnahan was later replaced by Naomi Scott in August 2020, due to scheduling conflicts caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.[7][8] Kristofer Hivju joined the cast that October.[9][10]

Distant began filming in Budapest, Hungary, on September 21, 2020,[11] during the COVID-19 pandemic, and as a result, the film's crew had to follow COVID-19 protocols and safety measures, such as wearing masks while working, practicing social distancing, participating in frequent testing for the virus, and following "extensive sanitization" procedures during shoots.[12] On November 13, 2020, director of photography Jeff Cutter announced that filming had concluded,[13] and by May 2021, the film was still in post-production.[14][15] In July, it was reported that the film score would be composed by Steven Price and that Zachary Quinto was part of the cast.[16][17]

Release[]

Distant is scheduled to be released by Universal Pictures on March 11, 2022, alongside Pixar's Turning Red.[17]
