Prior to becoming the mayor of Timișoara in 2020, after the 2020 Romanian local elections, Fritz was a member of Alliance 90/The Greens (i.e. the German ecologist party) between 2009 and 2019 and also a political advisor to former German president Horst Köhler (whose parents were re-located to Nazi Germany from Rîșcani, northern Bessarabia, now Republic of Moldova) between 2016 and 2019.[2][3][4] Fritz is a conductor by profession. Biography[]
A native of Germany, Dominic Fritz came to Timișoara in 2003 at the initiative of priest Berno Rupp.[5] Subsequently, Fritz visited Timișoara regularly in the years to come and was in charge of Timișoara Gospel Project.[6]
In 2020, he became mayor of Timișoara after defeating his predecessor Nicolae Robu who was supported by the National Liberal Party (PNL). Fritz won over Robu in the first round by a margin of 53.24% of cast votes. Thus, he became the first foreign mayor of Timișoara since 1989.
As incumbent mayor of Timișoara, he has been active in monitoring and solving the COVID-19 pandemic locally through a series of measures.
Fritz does not have Romanian citizenship, but he said that he wants to obtain it in the near future.[7][8][9]
