Michael Turner (August 1, 1977 – January 30, 2021), best known as Double K,[1] was one half of hip hop duo People Under The Stairs, serving as a vocalist/MC, DJ and producer. He recorded and produced 12 studio albums and over 20+ singles, EPs, and compilations with People Under The Stairs. He also recorded and produced one solo album "Clinophobia" (2017).

Turner was a producer and DJ for People Under The Stairs, Villain Park, Kidd Lexus, and Blvme. He was older brother of Villain Park group member Smoke, rapper Pookie Blow and first cousin of celebrated Los Angeles producer, Computer Jay. He produced the very first solo song by Murs called "Red Dots" [2] in 1996.[3] In the garage of his own home, Double K recorded George Clinton of Parliament for his appearance on the People Under The Stairs album Stepfather. Double K was a lifelong Parliament Funkadelic fan and also an official member of George Clinton's Funk Mob. His musical aliases include: DJ Kaos, LA Mike, Hale Bop, K Jackson, Kidd Drunkadelic, Dub K and Boogie.

In April 2018 Mike appeared in a long form interview for Episode 81 of Peter Agoston's The House List podcast.[4]

On January 30, 2021 Turner died at his home.[5][6]

Early life[]

Michael Turner was born in Hollywood and raised in West Los Angeles on Crescent Heights Blvd. His father, Michael Turner Sr. was a drummer and musician. Mike was introduced to an eclectic mix of records at an early age by both his father and mother. He attended Saturn Street Elementary School, where he won the 1985 talent show and won by performing a Fat Boys cover.

Mike attended Alexander Hamilton High School alongside Murs, Scarub, and Eligh, who he would collaborate with during their early musical career as Log Cabin.[7] Mike started out as a DJ getting introduced to the techniques, components, and style from DJ Sweat. He would perform at high school functions and was known under the moniker DJ Kaos for some time. He would then take on the name Double K from the character Kenny "Double K" Kirkland played by Guy Davis[8] in the film Beat Street (1984).[9]
