Durgamasur was a Hindu demon born in the family of Hiranyaksha, to demon Ruru. Goddess Mahadevi took her form of Durga to kill this vicious demon. Before killing this demon she form of Shakambhari because he stole the four Vedas and deprived vulnerable beings of food and water. Goddess Shakambhari also took the form of Devi Shatakshi. In this form Devi fulfilled the shortage of water in the earth by decorating her body with 100 eyes. By killing this demon, the Goddess gained the name Durga. Goddess Durga killed the demon on the top of the mountain Shivalik Himalaya. Later, a temple was built as Kanaka Durga Temple at Vijaywada, Andhra Pradesh. Moreover, the place Vijaywada was named after the victory of the Goddess over this demon. A festival called Shakambhari festival is celebrated every year during Ashadha month.
