East Bilney is a village and former civil parish, 19 miles (31 km) north west of Norwich,[1] now in the parish of Beetley, in the Breckland district, in the county of Norfolk, England. In 1931 the parish had a population of 117.[2] It has a church called St Mary which is located away from the village[3] and a car dealer called East Bilney Garage on Fakenham Road.[4]
History[]
The name "Bilney" means 'Bil(l)a's island'.[5] East Bilney was not recorded in the Domesday Book and was accounted for under the Earl Warren's lordship of Gressenhale.[6] In 1875 a school was erected at Hungry Hill for East Bilney and Beetley.[7] On 1 April 1935 the parish was abolished and merged with Beetley.[8]
