Edge and Rey Mysterio are a professional wrestling tag team in WWE, currently performing on the Raw brand. They are former WWE Tag Team Champions during their original run together.
History[]
Original run (2002)[]
In October 2002, Edge and Mysterio were placed together as a team to participate in a tournament for the newly created and SmackDown-exclusive WWE Tag Team Championship. They lost to Kurt Angle and Chris Benoit in the finals of the tournament at No Mercy;[1] the match was voted Match of the Year by the Wrestling Observer Newsletter. After they failed to win the titles, Mysterio and Edge defeated Los Guerreros in a number one contender's match on the October 24 episode of SmackDown! to earn a title shot.[2] Two weeks later on the November 7 episode of SmackDown!, Mysterio and Edge defeated Angle and Benoit in a two out of three falls match to win the WWE Tag Team Championship.[3] They soon lost the WWE Tag Team Championship to Los Guerreros in a Triple Threat Elimination match that also involved former champions Angle and Benoit at Survivor Series.[4] Shortly after the loss, Mysterio and Edge disbanded as a tag team to resume their singles careers.
Feud (2008)[]
Edge and Mysterio engaged in a feud over the World Heavyweight Championship on the January 4, 2008 episode of SmackDown!, when Mysterio emerged victorious in the Beat the Clock challenge for the chance to face Edge at the Royal Rumble, with Mysterio lastly defeating Edge himself.[5] At the event, Edge retained the title after his on-screen lover, SmackDown general manager Vickie Guerrero, interfered by receiving an attack for Edge by Mysterio.[6] On the February 1 episode of SmackDown, Theodore Long, who was acting as the General Manager due to Guerrero's scripted injury, assigned a rematch between the two at No Way Out.[7] Mysterio was injured at a live event overseas on February 13, but still chose to compete in his match.[8] On the February 22 episode of SmackDown, Mysterio announced that his injury would keep him out of action for at least six months, and he eventually underwent three surgeries within the space of a month.[9][10]
Reunion (2021–present)[]
On the June 4, 2021 episode of SmackDown, Rey and his son Dominik successfully defended their SmackDown Tag Team Championship against The Usos, albeit with controversy as Jimmy's shoulder was lifted although the referee wasn't aware. After Adam Pearce and Sonya Deville granted a rematch later that same night, the Mysterios again retained their titles after Roman Reigns interfered and attacked the Mysterios, causing a disqualification, and both were assaulted by Reigns afterwards.[11] The following week on SmackDown, Rey called out Reigns for attacking Dominik, and challenged Reigns to a Hell in a Cell match at the namesake pay-per-view, but before Reigns could answer, Rey attacked Reigns with a kendo stick, but was ultimately overpowered, and while Dominik joined the brawl, Reigns powerbombed Dominik over the top rope and out of the ring. The next day on Talking Smack, Paul Heyman, Reigns' "special council", formally accepted Rey's challenge on Reigns's behalf.[12][13] On June 17, however, the match was moved to the SmackDown prior to the pay-per-view in which Rey lost to Reigns.[14]
The following week, Edge made his return following a two-month hiatus on the June 25 episode of SmackDown, attacking both Reigns and Jimmy Uso.[15] The following day on Talking Smack, it was announced that Edge would face Reigns for the Universal Championship at Money in the Bank. On the July 9 episode of SmackDown, the Mysterios aided Edge in attacking The Bloodline,[16] and the following week, the first WWE event with full capacity since the COVID-19 pandemic, Edge and the Mysterios were defeated by The Bloodline in a six-man tag team match.[17]
In mid-2022, the Mysterios began feuding with The Judgment Day (Finn Bálor, Damian Priest, and Rhea Ripley) over the group's desire to recruit Dominik, with the latter continuously refusing, leading to the group attacking the Mysterios in several occasions. During Rey's 20th anniversary celebration on the July 25 episode of Raw, the Mysterios defeated Bálor and Priest in a tag-team match. Afterwards in a backstage segment, Ripley attacked Rey's daughter Aalyah before dragging Dominik away, leading Rey into an assault by Bálor and Priest.[18] At SummerSlam, the Mysterios defeated Bálor and Priest in a no disqualification match following an interference from the returning Edge, the Judgment Day's former leader, who attacked Bálor and Priest, allowing the Mysterios to defeat them.[19] At Clash at the Castle, after Rey and Edge defeated Bálor and Priest, Dominik hit Edge with a low blow. Rey pleaded with Dominik to stop, but Dominik hit a devastating clothesline on Rey, turning heel and disbanding the Mysterios in the process.[20]
