Ediene is a town as well as one of the five clans located in the Abak.[1] Its inhabitants speak the Annang language.

History[]

Ediene is a major place and a region of Akwa Ibom State, the area is naturally rich in her resources. UNIUYO's (Ime Umana Campus) is situated in the area.

Ediene is very rich in the production of Palm oil, ceramic sand, glass sand and rich colourful sands for any construction. Ikot oku ubara is the most populated and the industrious and economic center of the town. Ediene is usually called "EDIENE ABAK". Ediene is also rich in culture such as "Ekpo masquerade" "Nnabo" and abang cultural dance. Ediene Abak is the rich when talked of Academic. Schools like Tower of ivory school, St Mary's Senior Science College, University of Uyo, Comprehensive Secondary School etc is located in Ediene Abak. Lily Hotel and many other hotels are located in Ediene Abak, Health Facilities such as Holy Inoson and Health center is also located there.

Ediene Abak is also a home to one of the longest and tallest bridge in Nigeria located between the valley separating Oku Abak and Ediene Abak. Ediene Abak is predominantly Annang people. It is bounded between Uyo and Abak Local Government Areas.

ORIGIN It is believed that ediene has existed since 1600 till date. According to Late Chief Effiong Eyo Iwok and Late Chief Umoh Udom Etuk(both from Nyah family in Ikot oku Ubara village) Ediene people migrated alongside with their fellow annang brothers from usakedet(present Isángelé in southern Cameroon) they all settled in Aruchukwu in the present Abia state of Nigeria, later moved to settle in Abak. According to the history of Ediene Abak, Ediene (village) names were given according to the gods or goddess of that place, for example, ikot oku ubara was named according to the goddess who lives in the river between Goodnews Gospel Village and the St Mary's Senior Science College Ediene Abak. The goddess has been said to be so powerful among every other gods in the village as at those ancient days before Christianity took over. Ikot Obio Ndogho was also attributed to the gods called "Ndogho".

LAWS AND TABOOS. Ediene people according to late chief (Udom Umoh Etuk in 2006, who was an indigene and one of the chiefs) said that, Ediene people prohibited the eating and killing of "Ebom"(bir). Twins were as well taken to the evil forest or family semetery where St Mary's Science College is located as punishment since they saw twins as a taboo. The were prohibited from pounding or making noises at night time. The Ekpo was used as the military to secure and protect the village from Intruders and visitors penetrating or migrating into the village.

EDUCATION Ediene people had their own way of passing informations, skills and various trainings to their children and their offsprings. One of the general methods was "Oral tradition" and night or moon story telling mostly practised for fun and pleasure.

CULTURE AND TRADITION Ediene people were brave and strong and courageous Annang people who were practicing African traditional Religion until the colonial masters arrived is 1800s. Ediene people held Strongly to their culture and tradition to the point of fighting and resisting the colonial Masters and the missionaries who arrived Abag(present Abak LGA) ikot anwan in 1800s. According to Late Mr Cletus Okon who is an indigene of Nto Enin in Ikot Obio Ndogho, Ikot Oku Ubara said that the missionaries were serious attacked by the Ediene people which mostly occurred at the valley between Abak town and Ediene were Tilapia Island Resort is located, as the first missionaries were killed due to seriously trying to stop the culture and the beliefs of Ediene and Abag(Abak) people but Ediene people were subsequently overpowered by the colonial masters. Ediene people has alot to play in the history of Abak. They were rich in masquerade, Akata, nnabo and ekoong. Ediene people are very good people who accepted visitors as their own without having the second thought. The Present St Mary's Senior Science College was the village and family cemetery For ikot oku ubara people mostly the Nyah family. But was owned and controlled by Late Chief Eyo Iwok Otonton whose father Chief Iwok was the Chief Priest of Ikot Oku Ubara, but was officially handed over to the missionaries as a sign of Love and a total surrender to the belief of Christianity. Ediene people gave out their children to marry outside the village. One of their favorite festival (nnabo) is always displayed at the end of the year alongside with their counterparts other villages though everything is finally done done at ikot okoro road, Abak town.

LAND FORMS, BOUNDARY AND TOPOGRAPHY. LAND FORMS. Ediene is a flat land that is suitable for development and for planning purposes.The Easthern boundary is sloppy and is bounded by a small river(fresh water) which has its original from Ibagwa River. Ediene has a shape similar to a kite. It is small and has the length of about (it has not been officially surveyed) 8 kilometers long and the breadth of about 4 kilometers long.

BOUNDARY AND LOCATION Ediene Abak is bounded by Manta, Ukpom, and Midim waterside at the North, Oku Abak, Abak Usung atai by the West, Urua usung, ikot ofong ikono by the South and Ikot Ekpeyak ikono by the East. The sun always rises from the eastern part of the village which is Okot Ekpeyak ikono. Ediene Abak is located in the heart of AKWA IBOM STATE. A village between Uyo and Abak. Located in the Uyo Capital City.

TOPOGRAPHY AND SOIL TYPE Ediene is suitable for any category of development. The soil is fertile enough to also encourage Agricultural Activities. The land is flat and strong, not prone to erosion, rich in the supply of oxygen.

OCCUPATION AND SKILLS Ediene people are very good in sand drilling, fishing, farming, Palm oil production, Accademics, welding etc. Their predominantly occupation are Farming, Sand drilling and palm oil production. Prominent sons and daughters of Ediene Abak include, Honorable Mrs Ekemini Edet, Late Chief Effiong Eyo Iwok, Chief Sunday Umoh Akpan(clan head) Late Chief Ibanga(former clan head). Mr Amense. Tpl Lady Teresa Emmanuel Ating(former State Director of Town and country Planning,in Ministry of Lands and Water Resources Akwa Ibom state) Honourable Joseph Ikpaisong( former chairman of Abak LGA) Honourable Victor Morgan. Late Royal Highness Usoro Nyah(Former Paramount Ruler of Abak LGA etc.
