Edmund James Whalen (born July 6, 1958) is an American prelate of the Catholic Church who serves as an auxiliary bishop for the Archdiocese of New York.

Biography[]

Whalen was born and raised in Staten Island, New York. He attended Blessed Sacrament Church and School, Monsignor Farrell High School, Cathedral College of the Immaculate Conception, Pontifical Gregorian University, and Alphonsian Academy.[1]

On June 23, 1984, Whalen was ordained to the priesthood for the Archdiocese of New York. He has served the archdiocese as: parochial vicar for Church of the Resurrection (Rye, New York); priest-secretary to Cardinal John O'Connor; faculty/leadership at Monsignor Farrell High School, St. Joseph Seminary (Dunwoodie) and St. John Neumann Seminary Residence (Bronx); pastor of St. Benedict's Parish (Bronx) and St. Joseph–St. Thomas Parish (Staten Island); and archdiocesan Vicar for Clergy.[1]

Pope Francis appointed him an auxiliary bishop for the archdiocese on October 10, 2019,[2] and he was consecrated two months later on December 10.[1]
