Eelam (disambiguation)

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Eelam (Tamil: ஈழம், īḻam, Tamil: [iːɻɐm], also spelled Eezham, Ilam or Izham in English) is the native[1] Tamil name for the South Asian island now known as Sri Lanka.

Eelam is also a name for the spurge (a plant), toddy (an intoxicant) and gold.[2][dubious ]

The Tamil lexicons (Nika'ndu), Thivaakaram, Pingkalam and Choodaama'ni, dating from c. 8th century AD, equate the word Eezham with Chingka'lam (the Sinhala country).[3]
