Ehsan-ul-Haq Piracha

Ehsan-ul-Haq Piracha (1932-2019 |احسان الحق پراچہ}}) was a Pakistani politician. [1] He was from the town of Bhera in Sargodha District, Punjab, Pakistan.

Ehsan ul-Haq Piracha died in Islamabad on 1 February 2019.[2]

Family[]

His father, , was an elected member of the Central Legislative Assembly of India for two terms - from 1930 to 1934 and 1934 to 1946 - as well as an elected member of the United Punjab Assembly in 1946. After partition, he served in the Punjab Assembly from 1947 to 1951, while remaining the chairman of the municipal committee of Bhera from 1924 to 1968. He was elected as the chairman of the Zila council in Sargodha in 1956 and a member of the divisional council of the Rawalpindi Division.

Ehsan-ul-Haq's uncle on his father's side, Khan Bahadur Fazal Ilahi Piracha, was elected member of the Punjab Assembly and one unit assembly from 1951 to 1958 and remained minister. He later became an elected member of the Senate of Pakistan, from 1973 to 1976.

Ehsan-ul-Haq Piracha's son Haroon Ehsan Piracha was elected member of the National Assembly in 2005.

His brother, Anwar-ul-Haq Piracha, was nominated as a member of the Majlis-ash-Shura (equal to a member of the National Assembly) from 1981 to 1985. He was elected member of the Punjab assembly in 1985 and 1990. His other brother, Inam ul-Haq Piracha, was elected as a member of the National Assembly in 2002 and district Nazim Sargodha in 2005.

Education[]

After his early education at local institutions, Ehsan-ul-Haq Piracha was admitted to Government College, Lahore where he earned his BA in Arts in 1952. He continued to study Law and Jurisprudence and received a LLB degree from the Punjab University's Law College Lahore in 1954.

Politics[]

Ehsan-ul-Haq Piracha was elected as a member of the Provincial Assembly of Punjab in 1970 and again in 1977. He served as in the Punjab Cabinet until the imposition of Martial Law in July 1977.

After restoration of democracy in the country, he was elected as a member of the Senate against a technocrat seat from Punjab in 1985 and continued to be a Senator until 1988. He was appointed provincial minister in 1988 in the caretaker government.

He was elected as a member of the National Assembly in 1988 and again in 1990. He held the portfolio of the Ministry of Finance, Economic Affairs, Planning and Development as a Minister of State in the Federal Cabinet from 1988 to 1990. He was appointed the federal minister for commerce in 1993 caretaker government.

Ehsan-ul-Haq Piracha was elected as a member of the Senate of Pakistan in March 1994 for a six-year term. He was a member of the Senate Standing Committees on Commerce, Communication and Railways and on Finance, Revenue and Economic Affairs and Statistics and he was also a member of the Functional Committee of the Senate on Government Assurances.
