Rubén Doblas Gundersen (Spanish: [ruˈβen ˈdoβlaz ˈɣundeɾsen];[a] born 13 February 1990 in Mijas), better known by his pseudonym El Rubius or elrubiusOMG (/ˈrbiəs/), is a Spanish-Norwegian YouTube personality whose channel primarily consists of gameplays and vlogs. His channel currently has over 7.3 billion views[4][5] and 40.3 million subscribers.[6] It is also the 50th most subscribed YouTube channel in the world.

A tweet from Rubius' official Twitter account was the most retweeted tweet in the world since 2016. The tweet was retweeted more than 1.3 million times.[7]

He is one of the most popular streamers on Twitch with the fourth most-followed Twitch channel in the world.[8][9]

Biography[]

Early years and education[]

Rubén Doblas Gundersen was born on 13 February 1990 in Mijas, Málaga.[10] He is the son of a Norwegian mother named Bente and a Spanish father with a younger sister named Liv on his mother's side and two brothers on his father's side.[11] When he was three years old, his parents divorced. His mother moved to Bergen with Rubén, where she became a partner with another Spanish man named Héctor, whom Rubius often refers to as The Godfather in his videos. He moved back to Madrid, where he went through primary and secondary school, because of that. His first console was a Super NES to which Rubén admitted that it was essential to develop his love for video games and geek culture and that if it hadn't been for that he would never have reached where he was.[12][13]

In his high school stage, at the age of 16, his parents separated again, so he relocated to Norway again. During this time, he met Miguel Ángel Rogel Ruíz, better known by his online alias mangelrogel or simply Mangel, through an internet forum and began to upload his first videos on YouTube through elrubius, which Rubén claimed to have chosen that as a play on words since, as a child, he had blonde hair and his name was Rubén. He finished his studies and returned to Spain with his godfather, where he worked as an intern and in a supermarket before entering to study 3D modelling and animation in Arteneo School in Madrid.[11]

Later years and appearances[]

After studying 3D modelling and animation, El Rubius made his first cameo appearance, being in Torrente 5,[11] a Spanish comedy film starred and directed by Santiago Segura, in 2014.[14]

In 2019, he made his second cameo appearance in the Spanish film Padre no hay más que uno[11] which was also starred and directed by Santiago Segura.[15]

In January 2021, he changed his place of residence from Spain to Andorra as part of a trend of other Spanish YouTubers moving to the country. The move resulted in public controversy due to Andorra's much lower income tax rates.[16]

Career[]

YouTube channels[]

El Rubius has three channels: Rubius Z, elrubiusOMG, and RubiusFX. His first channel "Rubius Z" (formerly called "elrubius") was created on 3 April 2006. His second channel "elrubiusOMG" was created on 19 December 2011 because he could not become a YouTube partner on his first channel due to a strike. His third channel "RubiusFX" was created on 14 March 2011.

Although his channels are focused on gameplays, El Rubius also posts vlogs, challenges, fan question answers, and sketch comedies, among others.

In 2011, his channel started becoming popular in many Spanish-speaking countries. He gained attention when he posted a gameplay of The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim.[17] He later published videos of him on the Chatroulette website which gained him an even larger following.[18]

He became the most subscribed Spanish channel in November 2012 by surpassing fellow YouTuber Willyrex.[19] In February 2013, he reached one million subscribers and two years later, in February 2015, he became the first Spanish YouTuber whose channel reached 10 million subscribers.[20] Therefore, in October 2015, he got the Diamond Play Button at the YouTube 10th Anniversary Party in Madrid.[21][22]

El Rubius also made appearances in the 2015 and 2016 editions of YouTube Rewind.[23][24]

On 25 March 2018, El Rubius broke Ninja and Drake's record for the most concurrent viewers during a Fortnite stream and the record for the most concurrent viewers on a YouTube Gaming livestream with 1.1 million people tuning in.[25] The tournament consisted of 99 other Spanish-speaking streamers who all broadcast the game to their own audiences. Altogether, the Battle Royale tournament had over 42M live views.[26] He later reached 30 million subscribers in July 2018.[27]

Publications[]

In 2014, El Rubius published El libro Troll, an interactive book full of challenges.[28] The book reached number one in sales in Spain for eight weeks and was a bestseller at the Madrid Book Fair 2014.[29] The Superintendencia de Industria y Comercio deemed it unsuitable for children and teenagers,[30] and it was described by parents as a sexual book.[31]

Spanish publishing group Planeta published El Rubius' first comic, titled El Rubius: Virtual Hero, on 15 September 2015.[32] Its second part, whose title is Virtual Hero II: La torre imposible, was published in June 2016.[33] The third and last part of the saga was published on 4 April 2017, and it was entitled Virtual Hero III: La máscara del troll.[34]

On 3 October 2018, El Rubius uploaded a documentary about his life on his YouTube channel.[35] It was released on Movistar+ on 11 October 2018.[36] On 12 October 2018, Virtual Hero, the first anime series released in Spain, premiered on Movistar+.[37][38] It is directed by Alexis Barroso, illustrated by Lolita Aldea, written by Juan Torres, and based on the comic by El Rubius.[39]
