Emiliano Buendía Stati (born 25 December 1996) is an Argentine professional footballer who plays as a winger for Premier League club Aston Villa.

Club career[]

Getafe[]

Born in Mar del Plata, Argentina, Buendía finished his formation with Getafe CF. On 30 March 2014, still a junior, he made his senior debuts, starting for the reserves in a 2–1 away win against CD Puerta Bonita for the Segunda División B championship.[4] On 13 April he scored his first goal, the first of a 2–0 win at Peña Sport FC.[5]

Buendía started the 2014–15 season still with the B-team and in the third level,[6] notably scoring twice in a 3–0 home success against CF Fuenlabrada.[7] On 5 December 2014 he played his first match as a professional, replacing Ángel Lafita in a 3–0 Copa del Rey win against SD Eibar at the Coliseum Alfonso Pérez.[8]

Buendía made his La Liga debut on 1 February 2015, coming on as a late substitute in a 0–1 away loss against UD Almería.[9] He scored his first goal in the category on 27 September, netting the second in a 3–0 home win against Levante UD.

On 5 July 2016, despite suffering team relegation, Buendía signed a new five-year deal with the Madrid outskirts side.[10] On 27 July of the following year, he was loaned to fellow second tier club Cultural y Deportiva Leonesa, for one year.[11]

Norwich City[]

2018–2020[]

On 8 June 2018, Buendía signed a four-year deal with EFL Championship side Norwich City.[12]

He scored his first goal for Norwich in a 1–0 win over Brentford on 27 October 2018, and played an integral role as one of the main creative attacking players in the team - scoring 7 further league goals as the club swept to promotion to the Premier League and the Championship title. Fans subsequently voted him into third place in the annual Player of the Season awards.[13]

On 8 July 2019, he signed a new five-year deal to stay at Carrow Road until the summer of 2024.[14]

During December 2019, Buendía created 29 chances for his teammates. This is the most chances created by a player in a single month in the Premier League since the stat began to be recorded in 2003–04.[15]

On 7 July 2020, Buendía scored his first-ever goal in the Premier League, coming in a 1–2 defeat to Watford at Vicarage Road.[16] Norwich would lose their next match to West Ham, a result which confirmed their relegation back to the Championship after only a single season in the top flight.[17]

2020–21 season: Promotion and Championship POTS[]

On 6 April 2021, Buendía scored once and provided three assists in an emphatic 7–0 victory over Huddersfield Town.[18]

On 17 April, Norwich secured automatic promotion back into the Premier League,[19] and won the division on 1 May with a 4–1 defeat of Reading.[20][21]

On 29 April, following a season in which Buendía scored 15 league goals and added a further 16 assists, he won the EFL Championship Player of the Season award.[22] He was also named as Norwich's Player of the Season, becoming only the fourth player from outside the British Isles to win the award.[23]

Aston Villa[]

On 7 June 2021, it was announced that an agreement had been reached for Buendía to be transferred to fellow Premier League club Aston Villa once he had returned from international duty with Argentina.[24] The deal was completed on 10 June. According to sources at Sky Sports the transfer fee was believed to be worth around £38 million.[25] and was confirmed to be both Aston Villa's record signing,[26] and Norwich City's record sale.[27]

Buendía made his debut for Aston Villa on 14 August 2021, in a 3–2 loss to Watford on the opening day of the season.[28] He scored his first goal for Aston Villa on 28 August 2021, in a 1–1 draw against Brentford in the Premier League.[29]

International career[]

On 16 September 2014, Buendía was called up to the Spain under-19s.[30] On 29 April of the following year, he was called up by Argentina under-20s for 2015 FIFA U-20 World Cup,[31] and joined the latter's training camp on 5 May 2015.[32] In May 2021, Buendía was called up to the Argentina senior squad for the first time.[33][34]
