Emma Chelius (born 2 August 1996) is a South African swimmer.[1] She was born and raised in Durban, South Africa. Emma matriculated from St Mary’s DSG in Kloof as Head of Sport and Swimming Team Captain. She went on to graduate with a BComm Management Accounting degree from the University of Stellenbosch. During her time at university, Emma was captain of the swimming team and received the Rectors Award for Sporting Excellence.

Emma has represented South Africa in the pool since 2012. Her first national team appearance was at the Zone VI Games in Zambia, where she won a silver medal in the 50m butterfly and gold medals in the 4x50m freestyle and 4x100m medley relays. In 2013, Emma competed in Dubai for the FINA World Junior Championships, finishing 28th in the 50m butterfly.

She competed in the women's 50 metre freestyle event at the 2017 World Aquatics Championships.[2] A month later, she competed at the Summer Universiade held in Taipei and qualified for the semi-final of the Womens 50m freestyle, where she finished 14th overall. Finishing 33rd in the 100m freestyle and 24th in the 50m butterfly, Emma returned to Stellenbosch to finish her final year of studies.

In 2018, Emma competed at the Commonwealth Games held in Gold Coast, Australia. Emma qualified for semi-finals in 3 events, the 50m freestyle, 100m freestyle and the 50m butterfly. In the 50m freestyle semi-final, Emma swam an identical time to Cyprus swimmer for 10th place. This resulted in a swim off for second reserve, which Emma won in 25.5, a time that would have initially qualified for the final.

[3] In 2019, she represented South Africa at the 2019 African Games held in Rabat, Morocco.[4] In April 2021, she qualified to represent South Africa at the 2020 Summer Olympics.[5] in the Women’s 50m freestyle. Swimming a qualifying time of 24.72 in the morning heats, Emma set a new South African record time, and finished 1st in the finals later that day.
