Eristalis flavipes, the orange-legged drone fly, is a species of hoverfly native to North America.[1] It flies from early April to mid-October, and occur in a wide variety of habitats, particularly wetlands.[1] E. flavipes measures 11-16 mm in length.[1]

- Length
- 13 to 17 mm.
- Head
- Face and cheeks and facial stripe are shining black with short yellow pile. Antennae are dark brown and plumose basally. Eyes are broadly contiguous in the male, with eye pile confined mostly to a vertical stripe.
- Thorax
- Mesonotum, pleurae, and scutellum, with very abundant, long, bright yellow pile over shining black except the center of mesonotum nearly hairless. Scutellum is wholly light yellow.
- Abdomen
- Abdomen is a deep shining black with the second segment dark red and covered with long black hairs with some yellow hairs intermixed..
- Wings
- Wings are hyaline with luteous veins female, with a large brown spot central part of wing. Vein R 4+5 loops into cell r 4+5.
- Legs
- Deep black, with black pile. Knees reddish, anterior tarsi brown, middle and posterior tarsi light reddish-yellow. Hind femora somewhat elongate, hind tibiae bent.
