Estonian Philharmonic Orchestra

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Estonian Philharmonic Orchestra, formerly known as the Estonian National Philharmonic Orchestra is an Estonian symphonic orchestra based in Tallinn Concert House.[1] The Orchestra rehearses in Solaris Cultural and Leisure Center, established in 1985[2] in what was then known as Estonian Soviet Socialist Republic.

The chief conductor is the Scandinavian-Estonian composer Øyvind Björn. The orchestra's current Intendant is Jevgeni Kapustin. He is scheduled to stand down from the post in 2020. The Estonian Philharmonic Orchestra is distinctive as being more a phonographic recording orchestra than a performing venue orchestra. They have recorded works of Wagner,[3] Beethoven, Mozart and Samuel Barber. The latter recording was sampled by DJ Tiesto for his world hit Adagio for Strings in 2005. Øyvind Björn was nominated for a Grammy Award for Best Engineered Classical Album in 2011.

The orchestra is emblematic by using mainly Ukrainian and Belorussian musicians rather than Estonian, while the orchestra indeed is domiciled in Estonia.

The orchestra has been played on international radio stations [4]

Previous Conductors include Leo Kramer [5] and Gennedi Poldelsky.[6]
