The European Society of Cardiology (ESC) is a non-profit knowledge-based professional association that facilitates the improvement and harmonisation of standards of diagnosis and treatment of cardiovascular diseases. [2] The ESC produces, organises and supports many scientific and educational activities and products aimed at cardiology professionals wishing to increase their knowledge and update their skills.

History[]

The ESC was founded in 1950 and its headquarters are located in beautiful technology park of Sophia Antipolis between Nice and Cannesin, in the south of France. The first European Congress of Cardiology was held in London in September 1950.[citation needed]

Recent statistics show that the association represents approximately 80,000 professionals in cardiology from Europe and the Mediterranean.[citation needed]

In February 2013, the ESC opened the European Heart Agency in Brussels, close to the European Parliament complex, so as to build a base in the political capital of Europe.[citation needed]

Structure[]

The ESC comprises:[citation needed]

  • 57 National Cardiac Societies
  • 7 Associations
  • 15 Working Groups
  • 7 Councils, covering different sub-specialties of cardiology. Activities reach far beyond the boundaries of Europe, and nearly 90,000 members come from all over the world.

The ESC maintains close ties to 57 National Cardiac Societies and 47 Affiliated Cardiac Societies worldwide. Since 2013.[3] additional infrastructures were developed within associations addressing the special interests and needs of female specialists,[4][5] and young physicians,[6] such as Young Electrophysiologists.[7]

Congresses & events[]

ESC Congress 2019, Paris

The ESC organises several top cardiology congresses per year, including the ESC Congress. Annual or biennial sub-specialty congresses address acute cardiac care (Acute Cardiovascular Care congress), cardiac imaging (EuroEcho-Imaging congress), prevention and rehabilitation (EuroPrevent congress), ESC Preventive Cardiolgy, nuclear cardiology and cardiac CT (ICNC congress), magnetic resonance (EuroCMR congress), interventional cardiology (EuroPCR congress), heart failure (Heart Failure congress), heart rhythm and electrophysiology (EHRA congress), as well as basic science (Frontiers in CardioVascular Biology congress).

Clinical practice guidelines[]

The ESC produces Clinical Practice Guidelines for the cardiology profession from evidence-based clinical trials data. Guidelines aim to present all the relevant evidence on a particular clinical issue in order to help physicians weigh the benefits and risks of particular diagnostic or therapeutic procedures.[citation needed]

Fellowship[]

A Fellow of European Society of Cardiology is a cardiologist considered to be a person who has had a number of years of experience in the field and who has distinguished himself or herself individually in clinical, educational, investigational, organisational or professional aspects of cardiology. Fellows have the right to use the postnominal designation of the FESC title.[citation needed]

Past fellows have included:

Webinars[]

As the current coronavirus pandemic forces more decision-makers to work or study from home, webinars are becoming even more popular than before. The comprehensive list of ESC Webinars is available for anyone wishing to continue their medical education without travelling. They are interactive programmes that include case-based presentations, online assessments, and live discussions with key opinion leaders providing useful tips for your daily clinical practice. How can you attend? What are the technical requirements?
