Eva-Maria Hagen (born Eva-Maria Buchholz; German: [ˈeː.fa ma.ˈʁiː.a ˈhaːgŋ̩] (About this soundlisten); 19 October 1934) is a German actress and singer. She was known as the "Brigitte Bardot of the GDR", but she was sacked for political reasons.

Life[]

She was born in 1934 and she was trained at the Academy for Performing Arts in Berlin before joining the Berliner Ensemble in 1953.[1] In 1954 she married Hans Oliva-Hagen and they had a child named Catherine (aka Nina Hagen). Her film career lead to her being called the "Brigette Bardot of the GDR".[2]

Despite becoming a successful film actress she was side lined because of her relationship with Wolf Biermann. He was a singer and songwriter but his politics lead to him not being employed. In 1976 her support for the now estranged Biermann lead to her being sacked. She moved to West Germany in 1977.[1] She is the mother of Nina Hagen and the grandmother of Cosma Shiva Hagen.
