Ferdinand Franz Wallraf (20 July 1748 - 18 March 1824) was a German botanist, mathematician, theologian, collector and Roman Catholic priest. His collection formed the founding nucleus of the Wallraf–Richartz Museum.
Biography[]
He was born in Cologne to a master tailor from the city. From 1760 he attended the and from 1765 the , graduating MA in 1767. With no money for higher studies (theology, law and medicine), he had to work as a teacher. He also received minor orders in 1763 before being ordained a priest on 9 December 1772 by , Bishop of Cologne. From 1776 onwards his friend professor funded him to study medicine, gaining his baccalaureat on 1 June 1778 and his masters on 3 August 1780.
In 1794 he was elected as Rector of the University of Cologne.[1]
