Reception[]
The Horn Book Magazine, in a guide review of Flame in the Mist, wrote "Despite melodramatic prose and uneven world-building, this should appeal to fans of romantic YA fantasy."[1] and the School Library Journal wrote "Ahdieh's strength lies in her intricate characterizations and detailed descriptions, all of which are perfectly showcased in feudal Japan."[2]
Flame in the Mist has also been reviewed by Kirkus Reviews,[3] Publishers Weekly (star review),[4] Booklist,[1] Voice of Youth Advocates,[1] Common Sense Media,[5] Romantic Times.[6] and The Washington Post.[7]

This story (and sequels) will undoubtedly enthrall readers seeking a torrid, tortured romance in a trendy setting; still, a disappointment from an author capable of so much more.

Ahdieh (The Wrath & the Dawn) is immensely skilled at crafting vibrant settings inhabited by sympathetic characters with rich pasts, and she also treats readers to a slow-burning romance that does not impede Mariko’s independence or goals, illustrating the power of a well-matched pairing.

Shades of Mulan and 47 Ronin frame the novel, but the fantasy elements and the vivid characters give the story its own distinct flavor.

“Flame in the Mist” is an action-packed and well-paced young adult novel, though it grapples with adult themes of isolation and the corruptive influence of power any reader will recognize. Though its central romance is a bit too much of a bodice-ripper the strength of this tale lies in its formidable heroine, Mariko.
