Frank Sherwood Cocheu (November 22, 1871 – May 28, 1959) was an American major general during World War I. He is noted for his command of the 319th Infantry, 80th Infantry Division during the Meuse-Argonne offensive in late 1918.

Early life and education[]

Frank Sherwood Cocheu was born on November 22, 1871 in Brooklyn, New York.[1]

He attended the United States Military Academy, where he graduated with the class of 1894.

Military career[]

He was commissioned into the infantry[1] in 1894 as a second lieutenant.

He served in the Philippines from 1899 to 1902.[1]

He attended the Army War College, graduating in 1908.[1]

He served as assistant director at the Army War College from 1908 to 1911.[1]

He was promoted to brigadier general on October 1, 1918.[1]

During the Mexican revolution of 1929, he served as Commanding General of American troops in Arizona.[2]

Awards[]

Cocheu received the Army Distinguished Service Medal for his services in commanding the 319th Infantry, 80th Division, from August 1917 to October 1918 in the Artois sector and during the Meuse-Argonne offensive.[3]

Death and legacy[]

Cocheu died on May 28, 1959.[1] He was buried in Arlington National Cemetery.[4]

Personal life[]

Cocheu married Kathleen Lacy on August 4, 1897.[1]
