Furla is an Italian luxury goods company that was created by the Furlanetto family in 1927. The company is currently a limited liability company, still owned by the Furlanetto family. Furla features Italian-designed products that range from handbags and shoes to accessories. Its headquarters are located in Bologna, in a historic 18th-century villa. Furla has 5 subsidiaries in the USA, France, Japan, China, and Korea.[1][2]

History[]

Furla was founded in Bologna in 1927 by Aldo Furlanetto to initially deal with the distribution of products and fashionable ladies' accessories via wholesale. In 1955, the first Furla store was opened in Bologna on Via Ugo Bassi, still operating in 2022. Starting from the seventies, Aldo Furlanetto was accompanied by his children Carlo, Paolo and Giovanna Furlanetto. In those years, the first line of Furla bags and accessory collection was born.

The company, meanwhile transformed into a joint-stock company, specialized in objects and accessories dedicated to the female world, from handbags, belts, keychains, jewelry, and over the years to produce some lines of handbags and accessories for men. In the eighties, the brand began to open its first single-brand stores in the French and American markets, followed by Japan in 1990. Furla currently exports to 71 countries. Its products are present in over 1000 retail sales outlets and 320 single brand boutiques, 156 of which are owned by the company and 164 are franchised.[3]

The company has gone into joint venture with Li & Fung Holdings Ltd. (est. in 1937) to penetrate the China Mainland, Hong Kong, and Macau markets.[4]

Recently, the company has also gone into joint venture with Genesis Luxury Fashion Pvt. Ltd. and has filed a foreign direct investment proposal to enter the India market.[5] As of 2019, the company will use only faux fur in its collections.[6]
